As a result of the positive doping at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the Italian Olympic Committee President of CONI, Giovanni Petrucci has suspended with immediate effect Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin who won silver in the road race. Rebellin earlier this month won the prestigious Fleche Wallonne race.
The Prosecutor Antidoping, Ettore Torri has opened an investigation and has ordered Rebellin to Rome to face CONI on Monday May 4 at 12 noon. The International Olympic Committee yesterday announced Rebellin one of six atheletes who tested posistive for called Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator (CERA) a third generation Erythropoietin (EPO) blood booster found in A samples.
Rebellin’s wife has stated they have requested the B sample to be re-tested.
If found guilty of doping Rebellin may face criminal and civil charges by the Italian Olympic Committee.
