The South African, Impey, crashed heavily within the last kilometre after colliding with Theo Bos from Rabobank. Impey was attended to by race doctors and to a hospital in where doctors reported a fracture of the third disk of his lumbar vertebra, a micro-fracture of his neck, a facial trauma, broken teeth and sutures to his lips.
The crash occurred inside the final 3km of the stage and therefore given the same time as the eventual winner Sebastian Siedler of Vorarlberg-Corractec and kept the yellow leader’s jersey by one second over Davide Malacarne (Quick Step). David Garcia Da Pena (Xacobeo Galicia).
