Cycling has been a tradition in the Western Australian Goldfields since the 1890s with the Menzies-Kalgoorlie road race starting in 1928. The race has now grown to become Australia’s richest handicap road race with $40,000 prize money.
The Goldfields Cyclassic takes place on June 4 – 5 2011 and features a two stage handicap race across the Goldfields from Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Menzies and on to Leonora taking you across the historic landscapes of the Western Australian Goldfields.
Each leg of the event will be run as an individual race. Each rider will be assigned a finish time as the time after the lead rider crosses the line and the time the rider crosses the line for each race. The times for each race are added together to give a total time behind the race leader for a final Cyclassic position.
The Goldfields Cyclassic incorporate the Menzies Classic / Chas Egon Memorial Race and Leonora Golden Wheels which each have their own line honors for all grades as well as the four person relay 132km Community Challenge (approx. 35km each leg).
The event is hosted by the Eastern Goldfields Cycle Club Inc and registration and further information will be shortly available on: www.cyclassic.com.au
