Pounding head

Just wandering if anyone else gets a pounding head when they are out riding for a long period of time or when it gets a little warmer? I do drink quiet well and keep up with my hydration, just that I have noticed this a couple of times now and have no idea why this happens.....

Used to (im susceptible to headaches as I used to get migraines).... bought a helmet with better ventilation and it made a big difference. Still get it from time to time though :(

Yep. Plague of my existence.

What works for me:

Have some sports drink and drink in small doses frequently.

Drink plenty.

Use a recovery mix (Sustagen Sport, Endura Optimizer or similar) with 500ml water straight after, then don't forget to drink more through the day.

Keep neck and shoulders relaxed and elbows bent. Soreness around this area often translates for me.

If it's very hot then don't go as hard either.

I used to get headaches very often when riding, hiking, etc.

Drinking 2-4 litres of water every day plus 1-2l on each ride keeps me hydrated and the headaches at bay.

+1 to that. I was reading somewhere a while ago that recent research has indicated a ridiculously high % of headaches (90 odd from memory) could be attributed to dehydration. Even if you say you keep up your hydration, you may need more than the average person??

Drink more water pre ride and during ride.

If this doesn't work, then try taking some electrolyte tablets aswell (i use salt sticks because they're conveniant - a good dozen or more fits very nicely inside a tic-tac packet inside the jersey pocket)

Sunglasses may also help by cutting down the glare on eyes.

Unfortunately for me I wear glasses, but I have the transitional lenses in them to help with the glare/sun. Wnet for a ride this afternoon and had no pounding head it was just a 50 min social ride until we did 3 hills not huge ones but enough for me to get of half way up the third hill. Now I am keen to practise the hills and have them as a friend instead of an enemy. I want to enjoy them........
