Is that full Red? Or is the groupset mixed with anything else?

Those bars are Easton EC90 SLX Equipe, got them brand new a couple of years ago for another project, but used here because of the longer reachpawnii wrote:very nice Nick.

Gotta slam that stem mate
Can't slam the stem as:
1: MA5 racer (ie 50+) not as flexible as you young blokes
2: this bike in theory is 1.5 sizes too small for me (in practise about 1/2 a size too small) so I need a little extra height (and in theory a longer stem but it is 1 1/4)
3: the only thing between the stem and the headset is the headset cap/spacer that came with the bike. I will need a smaller one to slam & it is 1 1/4 not 1 1/8, not easy to find
Once I get comfortable riding it aggressively, I might flip the stem but unless a 1 1/4 spacer of the right shape falls in my lap, probably will not replace it.
Full Red, except chain (KMC) and Ciamillo Zero Gravity Brakes (which was supplied by Pawnii along with the almost new brifters) most other components picked up relatively cheaply off ebay over a couple of years.adamr wrote:Is that full Red? Or is the groupset mixed with anything else?

Giant Cadex 980c
Shimano 105(5500 levers and RD, the rest is the old 105SC)
Rubino Pro with normal tubes on Fulcrum 5s
Do note Im unsure of how accurate my scale is. What's the best place/method to get it weighed?

That is a cheap nice looking vintage bike!QuangVuong wrote:Budget and lightweight as well as vintage! ~8.8kg as pictured with 1 metal and 1 plastic bottle cage, and no bar tape as of yet. Spent no more than $350 with all parts purchased. I prob could break 8.5kg by chucking on the DA(7400) pedals rather than these temporary BMX ones.

So, what is the secret to your light weight? Mine is about 7.17kg including Garmin 500, K-edge mount and GS-10 sensor. Where are the big weight differrences? What are your wheels?nickobec wrote:

Your Ultegra groupset is substantially heavier then Nick's Red groupset.adamr wrote:So, what is the secret to your light weight? Mine is about 7.17kg including Garmin 500, K-edge mount and GS-10 sensor. Where are the big weight differrences? What are your wheels?nickobec wrote:

Your Planet X brakes and Nick's Ciamillio brakes are pretty much the same weight.
Other advantages include....
1. 60g on handlebars
2. 25g on stem
3. 50g on tyres
That's 130grams already.
Other heavy parts you have are....
4. 259 Pedals - you could save a bit here. mine are 165g
5. 116 skewers. - you could save a bit here. mine are 45g
your wheels are pretty good at 1516g. You can save 30g off them with veloplugs instead of rimtape.

Yeah, I know. The frame is only 44cm. I am having difficulty finding the right geometry as my legs are long and have shorter torso.singlespeedscott wrote: Man that's a small frame with a lot of seatpost. What size frame is that and what's the saddle height?

Thanks pawnii. I appreciate the analysis. Now I just need to focus on what I see as an improvement for me. I am not so keen on weight saving that I will go with something I am not happy with.pawnii wrote:Your Ultegra groupset is substantially heavier then Nick's Red groupset.adamr wrote:So, what is the secret to your light weight? I like the shimano pedals, and the ultegra carbons are nearly as light as DA, so they have to stay. I have some Pro-lite Ti skewers on my list, which are heavier than yours, but I think look better than the really skinny and short QR levers.
Veloplugs are a good idea to save a bit. Stem is next on my list, as I think I could do with a slightly shorter one anyway. Ian trying to work out if an ergonova bar would be good, or if I should stick with an FSA carbon compact.
Nick, how do you find the attack/force tyres. I have 25mm tyres which I got for comfort on my alloy frame. I haven't tried thinner ones on my carbon frame, but the ride is smoother so it would probably be ok. Another option would be to get a set of 23mm and run 23/25 on both bikes. Another option is 23mm Conti TTs, which are lighter than GP4000s, but still have the anti-puncture layer.

Between mine and yours, the groupset, handlebars, wheels, tyres and skewers are all lighter on my mine. My frame & stem are slightly heavier but not enough to counteract 250g for the wheels, 250g for the groupset, 70gm for skewers, 60g tyres, 60g barsadamr wrote:So, what is the secret to your light weight? most of the build list
Brakes Ciamillo, Zero Gravity Ti 219
Cables/Housing Flying Snake 250
Cassette SRAM, OG-1090 (Red) 153
Chain KMC, X10SL 229
Handlebar Easton , EC90 SLX3 200
Bar Tape Selle Italia 35
Cranks SRAM Red 170mm GXP 630
Bottom Bracket GXP SRAM ceramic 110
RD Sram, Red, 2009 149
FD SRAM, Red, 2008, Braze On 58
Pedals LOOK, KéO Carbon CrMo 231
Saddle Selle Italia, SLR 147
Seat Post FM066SL 195
Shifters SRAM, Red 302
Tire Front Continental, GP Attack 180
Tire Rear Continental, GP Force 200
Tubes Supersonic x 2 104
Rim Strips Ritchey x 2 17
Wheels Farsports FSC-38mm 1240
Skewers planet X 44
Bottle cage x2 Ebay 34
BTW my FM066SL is the BB30 model so with that build kit, and a lighter stem it was in the 6.40kg range. It will be back on the road soon, as a budget build using a microshift group set and sharing the Farsports FSC-38mm wheelset, should be a sub $2.5k 6.50kg bike

I adore then, yes they get damaged relatively easily by the crap on the roads here, but no worse than my previous favourites Rubino Pros. I have also raced on GP4000s, far more confident on the attack/force combo.adamr wrote: Nick, how do you find the attack/force tyres. I have 25mm tyres which I got for comfort on my alloy frame. Should use my "training" wheelset more often, GP4000s on mavic open pro rims laced to a powertap elite. Unfortunately that is 3kgs including ultegra cassette, so I tend to train on my my 2kg or so "racing" wheelset a farsports 38mm or 60mm front wheel and 50mm rear laced to a G3 powertap.

I hear what you're saying about not sacrificing ride when it comes to cutting weight. Thanks pawnii. I appreciate the analysis. Now I just need to focus on what I see as an improvement for me. I am not so keen on weight saving that I will go with something I am not happy with.

I have ergonova ltd handlebars on an ARX LTD stem. Love them and highly recommend them if you're willing to spend lots of $$$.
