Go the cheapest....and budget for replacement frame +/- wheels every 20 crits.

ghrist....if I hear another erection anytime advert (during TdF), I'm going to vomit. I am not your target audience, as I presume most cyclists who can stay up late at night.

Hi Steven, knew it was you, unlikely somebody else would use your handle and also live in Cairns.

Back on topic, should I build my new crit frame to be under 7kg (using parts I put aside for my climbing bike), so I can take photos to post in this thread, so we get a nice alloy bike here.

Or stick to the original plan and build a solid 7.2kg crit racer
build it Nick. We need an alloy weenie

I started out with a 58cm (C to C TT) steel frame and end up buying a few slightly smaller one, 1st by accident, then by choice, as found out I ride 54 & 55cm framed bikes faster, ie more aero with bigger seat to bar drop and I corner more aggressively, so a 54cm frame is perfect for a crit bike for me. Instead of the 57cm frame that somebody my height is expected to ride.
PawPaw wrote:Go the cheapest....and budget for replacement frame +/- wheels every 20 crits.
Ooops! just bought a very well looked after, quaility frame that just spent it's 1st night outside of a house ever, in my shed (at least it had friends).

Wheel wise, racing the farsports 38mm chinese carbon clinchers, training and maybe some races with heavy powertap elite+ and mavic open pro rim + matching front. Wet weather racing have a nice alloy Shimano Ultegra wheelset with wet weather tires.

Strong believer in "Never race on Sunday what you can't replace on Monday". While I would be pissed if I destroyed my Fuji, Canyon or even my Giessauf (none can be replaced like for like). It is a risk I understand and take and why I will never race the Flanders (plus it is 57cm). Wheels and other components I consider consumables with a limited lifespan. If I destroyed my 38mm carbon clinchers this week, I would be a little annoyed, if the lasted two years of abuse I would be very happy.

As it a few months to crit season, the FM066 climbing frame at least a month away. I will have a go, 7kg easily achievable target, 6.6kg will be the challenge.

2 totally different bikes out of my fleet.

Number 1 is a 2005 Trek 5200 Superlight (aluminium not UCLV) US Postal Service team bike, I didn't watch weight when I built it, Ultegra gruppo with Fulcrum 5 wheels but only weighs 7.5kgs, which was why they used them as their 'climbing' bikes.

Image

Number 2 is a 80's Repco Vertex CR1 (Guy Leech signature series), again not too focused on saving weight, 7700 D/T 9 speed gruppo & Mavic CXP 22 wheels, all steel frame, but respectable for a steelie, 10.9 kgs (photo was with my previous gruppo, Suntour Edge 8 speed bike was 11.6 kgs).

Image

Will post a photo of my Benotto Ottimo when it's built, only a frame at present, early 90's bonded aluminium down tube shifting race bike, under 1300 grams frame & fork. Should be between 7 & 8 kgs finished, shouldn't be too shabby for an old D/T shifter.

I liked the "LOOK" of their older frames. The new ones, meh. Have to say those white AC wheels look a bit naff.

Love the Look 695 in general, but that version is awful. Running Ultegra Di2 and white AC wheels. There are much better spec'd versions out there
