carbon seat post - heavy weight?

Found this ebay item. carbon seat post for old frames with 26.8 dia.

i was surprised to see it weighs 420g (almost half a kilo), whereas other typical seat posts are only in the +-250g range.

it says carbon tube, which is supposedly light and a forged alum head. I'm lost.

Weight also varies according to the length of the post. But you are right, the post looked a lot lighter than the stated spec. Given it's eBay, you might care to verify that with the seller.

Kalloy make about half the worlds seatposts, so it's unlikely to be crap. It's cheap however. The weight? Well, many cheap 'carbon' seatposts are actually alloy with a layer of carbon bonded onto it. That's almost certainly what this is.

come to think of it, i've never seen a titanium seatpost yet.

if i get a relatively light 350mm, can i cut it down to 250? as i only need 150mm uninserted and 100mm min insert.

Original item is likely to be carbon veneer around alloy tube. Not that its a problem, but most of the Thomsons are lighter.

I had a titanium American Classic seat post on my Giant. Was about 420mm long, 27.2dia, and weighed about as much as my last burp. But you try finding one...

If I was an insurance broker, I would not insure your bottom from protrusion injuries.

well we got a response from the seller. mystery solved.

Hi Jeff,

It’s full carbon, only the head is alloy. It’s only 230g, NOT 420g. thanks for the sending me the mistake I am fixing the listing now.

I bought one only a few weeks ago - 208 grams. Branded Sabbath but actually made by USE. The site also lists titanium seatposts by Van Nicholas and Lynskey.

My limited experience with CF posts says the weight difference is fairly minimal anyway. It's one area I'd be really leery of ultralight, especially in something that will shatter instead of bend and snap.
