so now that i have ordered my road racing bike BMC SLR01 i had better get some race wheels

so what do you all recommend?????????

so far i have been recommended ZIPP 303s tubulars, soul c5.0t's (1.16kg tubulars) oh and 3Ts

hand-built TWEs in any depth you want for half the price of zipps

Before you go ahead with a race wheels purchase - please take note of the new UCI list, as there is no point getting wheels that don't conform, if you plan to race.

Here is a very current UCI list (note that neither Soul nor TWE wheels are on the list)

I wonder why Bracchianos aren't listed? I am close to pulling the trigger but not keen on getting pulled up by an officious type volunteer at an open race telling me I can't race cause my wheels are on the List.

What's your Budget and intended use?

The Braccianos fall within the Cycling Australia definition of a standard wheel, that is a minimum of 16 spokes and made entirely of metal - thus they are not required to be UCI approved

Definately fall within the definition of a standard wheel (I knew all those years studying law might be useful one day - who would have thought it would be something to do with interpretation of wheel standards)

ah, but TWE uses readily available rims i.e. reynolds and enve/edge composites which are on the approved list

In fact Greg (TWE) sponsors and supplies wheels to a number of national pro teams

tassie roads are rough, they go up, they go down, they are have wind....oh the wind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having raced, in Tassie Barry you need a few sets of wheels, I would recommend a 30-40mm set for windy days and a 50mm carbon set for ideal conditions and maybe a deep set for time trialling.

I've had issues with TWE hubs. Both front and rear.
I hope he has changed them in the last 2 years.

I have a set of Krysilium SL's which I use for everything. I have race mates with multiple wheels but I can go just as quick on one set!

I would look at a set of 30-40's Beaumeister wheels. Anything larger than 50's you will get blown accross the road. Also remember some of the roads we use are rough. IE last Sundays race quite few were worried about cracking their Zipp's. Especially in a group and hitting a pot hole at 40kmhr.

I believe my TWE wheels use Alex crostini rims. You'd think nearly a grand for a set of alex rims was insane, but for the stiffness strength and lack of weight they offer, and gregs unending assistance and warranty, they're great value ( I did spec the hubs and spokes with top shelf bits too that added a bit btw)

Greg at TWE made me a pair of 50mm full carbon clinchers with DT Swiss Aero spokes and smooth (but loud) hubs 20F / 24R 1,380gr (actual weight) for $1,700 plus courier delivery with greg's famous 'lifetime repair' warranty.

I use them as my every day ride, no issues after a couple of thou. km. They ride beautifully, roll forever..... blah blah blah and are every bit as good as old mate from down the road with 2010 404's fitted to the same bike as mine.

Unless you can inspect them or you know and trust the vendor I'd be avoiding 2nd hand carbon wheels sight unseen. But that's just me......

Velomine (USA) can do new 404 clinchers for just over AU $2k brand new..............

hmmmm. I am off zipp. I have flashpoints (made by zipp), they are awesome wheels but the zipp warranty is questionable. I found a defect on the wheels I only use them racing and had only done a dozen races if that. Zipp said not covered their warranty is any defect from brack line to rim is not covered by warranty. Luckily have found someone to fix it.
