Knobby tyres for 700 x 23c

Postby assarabbiya » Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:22 am

Good morning guys-

I just got my first 'thin wheel' bike and although I'm excited, looking at the smooth tyre just scares me of puncture.

Is there such tyre as knobby 700 x 23c tyre? I know it sounds paradoxical, but any puncture protection would make me feel better riding the bike in Pacific Highway..

Thanks for your replies!

Puncture protection? Get a streetwise slick.
Google Continental Gatorskin and Maxxis ReFuse in 700x25. (Make sure your frame and fork will take larger tyres.)

A slick profile tyre is not nec. going to puncture any faster than a treaded profile tyre. I don't see the point in having a 700c sized bike and then looking for 'knobbies' for it. Ride it for a while, enjoy the benefits of a better rolling tyre first - carry a spare tube (and be sure you know how to swap a tube out/in) before considering different tyres.

My 20 cents worth.....
3rd class cycling is always better than 1st class walking

For 700Cx23s the best puncture protection I have found are Schwalbe Durano Plus. Pricey though. Get them from wiggle.

You might be able to fit some 28mm Schwalbe Marathon Plus touring tires - I could on my Giant OCR2. Heavy, but you would need well positioned nails to puncture them. Again get them from Wiggle or whomever, probably half the price of LBSs.
