Need opinion as well

Postby unavailablerequest » Sun Sep 25, 2011 2:47 pm

hey guys,

i need some advise from all of you. ive not been riding for quite awhile but recently my passion has been reignited in road biking (i always wanted to try long long time ago), and finally i bought a road bike off ebay though it was an extremely crappy one because all i needed was something that gets me around and im not that rich, and little do i know, i am totally into it. but now that bike has become handicap,

which makes me come to my conclusion! i m determine to get myself something of good enough quality (used or new). ive come by a few bikes already and i am stuck in a dilemma and i require your expertise!

im 175 / 5'7ft so i probably fit 54cm / 21" - hopefully can get a bike within $800
i hope you guys can help me out a bit from those 5 bikes listed below. thank you :)

1) REID ROAD BIKE, BRAND NEW, ALLOY, ALL SHIMANO GEARING --> $219 (Im well aware of the crappy specs but what to complain, you pay peanut u get monkey. it does get around as a commuter) or that $440 one? - I come across these but after seeing so much controversy.. i dont know if the seller is reliable or not.

2) NEW 2010 CARRARO 915R D'AMBIEZ - ALLOY ROAD RACE BIKE --> Make an Offer (It ended but im trying to ask if its still available or not. And not familiar with campagnolo at all)

3) Bianchi Via Nirone 7 (AT) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/180726231639 ... 1438.l2649

4) Klein Aura X (AT) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/220858113352 ... 1438.l2649

5) Raleigh AIRlite 400 2011 from wiggle

I'm 5'7" and 167 cms and my 54 cm bike is too big.

A 52 cm will fit me better.

Make sure you get one that fits.

And welcome to cycling. There's a few cycle mad people on here. Not me though.

not too sure whats the size on the one i bought from ebay cos its too old that i cant see anything. oh! just got an idea... i can measure the TT to get an estimate!

im 5'74ft and based on the chart that i found online shows 54 and 55 suits me. i also heard that some bike seizing or rather, their design, is different. so on the general measurement it will be off scale. but thanks for telling me about it.

my friend just encouraged me to get a better bike so i can use it longer instead of changing once every few years. probably gonna head down CBD and see if they have anything within my budget...

First, it would be worth your while to do the online fit calculator below. Take note of the top tube length result, which will be the effective horizontal distance as if any bike had a horizontal top tube. Once you are sure of your measurements and have to the correct result, you'll know exactly what size bike you are looking for.

A 6 year old bike asking more than half price is too much in my opinion. Also be aware that, although unlikely, carbon forks can let go with little or no warning. Since you don't know the history of the bike, if you buy it (or any other carbon fork bike) be aware of the warning below.

I'm genuinely surprised one of the big carbon fibre producers hasn't arranged for you to be silenced.... Please stop trying to scare people

Don't buy a bike on special if it doesn't fit. The savings aren't worth it. Easier to fit on a bit that's too small for you (longer stem, setback post) than a bigger one, IMO.

Probably after Mr Continental finds drubie.

Just to show there are still problems out there:

A small failure rate but good of Spec to recall early.

I'm not specifically trying the scare people, but new riders buying secondhand should be aware of the potential danger. Trek wouldn't have the flyer if it didn't think there was potentially a problem.
