Choosing a new road bike

I have currently gone up a grade in my club racing and i have decided that i am due a new bike. I currently have a giant defy alliance 1 and i am thinking of getting a focus izalco pro 3.0 or a cervelo s5. Or should i just upgrade my wheels on the Giant defy from r500 to carbon wheels? Is there a noticeable difference between r500 and say planet x? Or mavic ksyrium elites?

Mate, anything will be better than the R500's. Consider the RS80 34mm profile wheels. I've raced on them for years with good results and they are a cheapish carbon laminate wheel.

Mate are you talking about very big performance gains when you compare mavic ksyrium elites and r500's?

I got hold of a set of giant PSLR-1 wheels for my defy and it's made a huge difference. Definitely worth while. I set a limit of ~$500 for a wheel set as anything else the frame doesn't justify.

This is what I did as well and they have done around 12000km trouble free. I upgraded from a similar level Bontrager wheel and you really do notice the difference. If you can, borrow a set to try. If you were local I'd lend you mine.

I can't vouch for the R500's because i've never ridden a pair, but I did own a pair of RS30's once and they were sluggish compared to the RS80's. So much so that I sold them and the RS80's have become my best training set. I also own a pair of Reynolds solitudes and these are o.k. but they flex more than the RS80's. Bear in mind i'm no lightweight either. I'm over 100 kg. I've also got a pair of Durace C50's tubulars which are very nice. They easily rank above the RS80's. But top of the list, and the difference for me is large, are my Zipp 404's. (The Durace C50's are for sale BTW to fund a new project)

Shimano R500's are a solid wheel, I love them for training and other non-racing duties. The hubs are really quite nice for the price IMO and the rims are very aero for their depth. Now if only Shimano made a Campagnolo free-hub...

I think a set of fulcrum racing's would be good. Can be used for training and racing. Very tough wheels...
