Winter jacket or rain jacket and base layers?

Postby Kwaichang » Mon Apr 08, 2013 11:40 am

I know there would be a pre existing thread here somewhere about this but I don't have the time to look for it...

Here goes just wondering what thoughts are about getting a quality warm winter cycling jacket or should me money be better spent on a rain jacket and some quality under garments arm warmers etc.

Buying gear today so be sharp with your replies people!

Go!

What climate i.e. where are you riding? I have a decent campag rain/spray jacket I have worn twice. Stopped the rain from coming in but caused me to sweat like nothing else even with only a regular s/s jersey under it so ended up just as wet anyway. I hate the damn thing now, would rather be drenched in rain than sweat. My clothing selection these days is based on keeping warm rather than dry.

Melbourne winter, cold but not freezing can be quite wet here though. Yeah I wore a spray jacket the other day and was soaked afterwards. It wasn't a cycling specific jacket though.

So no different to Geelong then. Last wet ride I did was freezing, coming down sideways. Couldnt feel my toes when I got back. Still didnt wear it and glad I didnt, torso was fine with s/s jersey, arm warmers (which came off halfway through) and a gilet.

I bit the bullet and bought an Assos Bonka.
Chose warmth over complete rain proof.
Will see how it goes!
