Crit season! 11t or 12t?

Though I found a ride you need an 11t for.
Boxing day Old Papa's World Cup. I ended up with 112km at 38kph including my ride to and from Freo and I got dropped in kings park. Apparently the pace for the actual ride was 46kph.

That is the average for the 1 hour 40 minute "training" ride, most of the time the speed is a little faster, around 50kph, with top speeds in the high 6Ts.

A couple years back it was 60kph+ for 5km with a tailwind, so 110rpm on 53/12.

46 kph training ride ? Crikey.
Last week at Sutherland Sydney crit, A grade did a 43kph average according to young DD's Garmin, the heat was on all race with with Chris Sutton from Sky, Donnelly and Beckinsale from Genesys, 5 Skoda riders, 4 Yamaha riders and all the usual freaks. Wiggle Honda's world champion Bronzini who just won the Michelton Bay crit could only manage a 2nd place in B grade.

So 46kph is one hell of a training ride!

It's not really a training ride, more an unsanctioned race posing as a training ride. I topped out at 68kph according to my garmin file. Cam and Travis Meyer, Luke Durbridge and a bunch of other international and local pros ride it and drive the pace. It's a pretty crazy ride.

True, but this one is a touch quicker than most.

A little bit of an understatement, the riders on the front are trying to rip the legs off the 200 odd participants. Which the effectively do, the video Pravada linked to, shows the remains of the bunch hammering the last couple of ks and a not a small group of spectators at the finish. The jerseys worn are the real thing, national champion, world tour, NRS teams etc. Which is why it is such a big event, anybody can just rock up and ride/race against some of the best in the world.

Eastern Creek is a crit track when they do the short circuit... 70kmph sprint on the right day... try doing that in a 50/12

i think i did that on my last race there. spent the whole race cursing that i hadnt had time to change from my kiama gear (compact and 12-25) to the usual standard cranks. somehow i won the bunch sprint, and i think i hit 135rpm and 72km/h (thank you tailwind gods). (and thank you to the 'not throwing up after the race gods too, who kindly intervened at the right time)

Now you are arguably THE best masters A grade crit rider in Sydney, so how many 11 tooth cogs have you worn out in crit racing?
How often do you need that last cog?

Honestly mate I use one everytime I sprint. In saying that I also sprint with brute force not leg speed. I will even use the 11 into a head wind as it seems that the high torque approach is how I make power. I am so believe it is why many people fail in sprinting. They think they have to sprint with leg speed and form. I reckon if 90%of people just gripped it and ripped it and kicked first in an 11 cog there sprinting would improve out of sight.
In saying this it does not suit kids like your young bloke who doesn't need to use this approach, the other downfall for
Me is trying to sprint like this after 140km is not always successful and guys that can't hold
My wheel in a crit sprint have beaten me in the past.
