Advice sought. Doing Roubaix 170klm sportive next year.

Postby leighthebee » Sun Dec 08, 2013 11:39 am

Aside from the fact I am now trying to drop weight and increase heart and lungs whilst staying healthy.....

I'm taking over my 2010 Roubaix. Can't embed the link but if you type "2010 specialized roubaix elite compact" into Google, it'll link straight to the archive.

Now my question is I'm 103kg at the moment and hoping by the April tour date I'll be mid to low 90's. The wheels are mavic cxp22's. Solid wheels, but heavy wheels. They have big spoke count of 28/32. Is there anything out there with a similar spoke count that'll give me the strength to get over 35k's of cobbles?

Looking to go to 25 or 28mm tyres, but leave the rest pretty much stock.

If you lose that 10kgs you won't be too worried by saving a few hundred grams on the wheel weight. If they are solid and proven just fit 28s ( if they fit ) and away you go.

I know the wisdom of that but the Fulcrum 1's on my other bike are so much lighter. I just don't think they'd handle the punishment. Particularly with my weight, even trimmed down....was looking for a middle of the road alternative.

Seems like a long way to go for a DNF.

If you must have new wheels, get tubulars and reduce the chance of a pinch flat.

Cheers,
