Club Racing around Syndey

Postby Frisky11 » Mon Feb 03, 2014 2:11 pm

Hi Sydney Cyclists

I just moved to Sydney and I was hoping to get more information about the racing around here. I've heard of a few like Heffron park crits but was hoping to hear what other races happen regularly? Plus anything like which ones tend to be harder, which ones have tougher courses etc, would be really helpful. I raced club B grade up in Brisbane so I'm planning on trying out in B grade and seeing how that goes.

Cheers

Angus

Off the top of my head some clubs that race crits are:
Suvelo (heffron)
LACC (barracks near olympic park)
Warringah masters (eastern creek?)

Road racing:
Central coast cycling club CCCC (calga)

Time trialling:
Warringah tri club (west head)
ATTA (calga)

Hardest racing in Sydney is Heffron Tuesdays and Manly at West Head.

There are many choices but it's mostly graded crits. Exceptions include:

St George - handicaps in winter on a hilly circuit
Heffron Tuesdays - 3 grade handicap crit
Manly WH - graded scratch races; hilly
Parramatta winter road races
Macarthur winter road races (occasional)
2016 S-Works Tarmac, 2014 Wabi Lightning SE, 2012 Felt F75, 2011 Genesis Equilibrium 20, ancient Avanti Pista track bike

Then again you could always drive an hour south and ride a real road race.
23rd March Illawarra CC has a 90km graded scratch race with hills, undulations, cross winds, potholes ...hard man stuff, you wont be able to sit in, follow wheels, do nothing and have a little sprint at the end :D
Southern Highlands has 3 or 4 awesome road courses as well. About an hour south also, depending on what part of Sydney you are in.
Details on their websites.

Thanks for the info, the cabici.net looks awesome but doesn't have the manly westhead race this sunday? I'm looking forward to having a go at all the different races anyway. Will have to check out some of the southern highlands ones too, I'm just in North Sydney so not too inconvenient

as a 60something kilo whippet, that's generally not my modus operandi :P

Friday nights at Sutherland during daylight savings. Plenty of NRS boys up there in A grade. Ben Harvey won a couple of weeks ago before taking bronze in the pursuit at the track nationals last week.
Haven't raced Heffron on a Tuesday, is it really that hard? I know the track can be a real killer, I raced A grade with Randwick Botany a few times as a junior (many moons ago) and Spurg, Computer, Jose Rodriguez et al were just smashing everyone (inc themselves) to pieces. There is just nowhere to rest/recover around Heffron when the pace is really on.
I'd be B grade now but am working at Randwick so might stop for a race on the way home before the series ends.

Yep, Heffron Tuesdays is hard. I ride B at Sutherland (and elsewhere) and C at Heffron. Sutherland is easier. Part of that is the handicap format, which gets everybody going, but harder is harder, whatever the reason. Computer rides A grade there, and Spurg rides B.

Incorrect. Last round of the Fixed Wheel Cup series was last week, the racing goes on.

Not me, my main passion is dirt so I'm down at Mt Buller this week for the National MTB series. If you're at LACC next week I'll be the guy in Manly kit - probably C grade.

That's good to know, I'm glad there are more rounds at HART.

Frisky,

West Head is on this Sunday as well, you should go out for that. You will have to pre book for B prestige, there was only 7 spots left for that grade when I booked the other day.

I'm not quite sure what grade I should be racing in, but B prestige is sold out now anyway, might be doing B hubbard or B Silver instead.

I just read the website, B silver is the same as B prestige which means you race up the hill out of Akuna Bay. The Hubbard grade is neutral up the hill out of Akuna. If you climb alright go prestige, if you can't go Hubbard.
