I went along to Heffron to scope it out. I got there at about 2 and stayed for an hour but there didn't seem to be that many people. It looked as if the race starting at 3 was going to be a bit bigger but I left about 5 mins before the start.
If anyone was there, was todays turnout similar to other saturdays?
Did anybody race at Heffron today?

Same happened to me about 6 weeks ago when I had a race and wasn't sure what grade would be right for my rehabbing body. I just waited for the 3pm D grade start instead.stretch wrote:I went along to Heffron to scope it out. I got there at about 2 and stayed for an hour but there didn't seem to be that many people. Yes, I was there.stretch wrote:I went along to Heffron to scope it out. I got there at about 2 and stayed for an hour but there didn't seem to be that many people. It looked as if the race starting at 3 was going to be a bit bigger but I left about 5 mins before the start.

I finished 4th in C grade.
Numbers were low in most grades except B.
Good news was the return of E grade (the 2pm race) with about 9 riders after a six or so week absence.
I think the cool weather, the wind and the fact that quite a few RBCC members are currently riding in Italy contributed to the lower than usual turnout.
Thanks to Beanzy on these forums for stepping up to the plate as Commissaire in the absence of the usual RBCC officials.

I had a go at Heffron D grade about 5 week back. It was my 3rd or 4th ride outside since getting back on the bike. I wrote about it here:toolonglegs wrote:Are you back racing Alex?...how was your first race back?.

I haven't raced since as really I need to train some more and work on technical matters around the leg-socket-pedal interface.
Crafty had me do a two lap TT at DGV a few Friday nights ago. 1st lap was OK (starting is hard as I am weak on the left) but the 2nd lap was very ugly 46.something seconds Being a fat bastard doesn't help!
Today I did an hour at DGV, some solo cruising around, some riding up track, a bit of skill work up track with another rider, some paceline riding and a couple of accelerations. NP of 206 watts for the hour, so that's not bad going. I go again tomorrow.

What bike do you ride/ what clothing were you wearing? I may have seen you warming up.531db wrote:Yes, I was there.stretch wrote:I went along to Heffron to scope it out. I have decided to mount an assault on the less competitive grades at Heffron in early October when I can get a 15 month licence. What do you suggest I do from now until then in order to 'cry in the dojo, laugh on the battlefield'?

I was there but didn't race. I was running the day whilst most of our hardworking committee are touring Sardinia on their bikes.....I was the bloke with the vest and clipboard.
As 531db said, E grade was back today with 9 riders. They had an average speed of about 31km/h. Not bad considering most of the group were new riders. Thanks to Dulwich Hill club for bringing along a contingent to experience racing.
Numbers were down a bit in A, C and D grades. B grade still had a large bunch.
To stretch: just come down we will ask a few questions and try and assess your capabilties.
As a guide D grade is about 34-36km/h, C grade 36-38km/h (when they have a go - this week same speed as D grade!!) B grade - 38-40km/h A grade 40+km/h.
Don't let the speeds worry you if they are above your "normal" pace, racing is always faster, there is also the bunch to drag you along.
I normally race D grade. Trust me if i can do it any one can. I am the really fat bastard......
Come down and ask any questions and we will try to help. As you mentioned best value now for membership is to wait till October for 15 month license.
Cheers

This is me a few weeks back. I'm on the far right in the same yellow jersey, and helmet as yesterday.
I rode my c1980 Apollo IV with period components though instead of my usual 1982 Farleigh singlespeed.
Some suggestions for preparation, ride Heffron in training to get used to the corners (quite tight and interesting cambers at the 'squircle'), also familarity with riding at pace in a group situation would be beneficial. [/img]
