Mt Mee Time Trial

Allrighty I have a 9k uphill time trial at Mt Mee on Saturday. My first club time trial!! Any tips? The first couple of ks are relatively flat before the climb proper begins.

Just don't go too hard off the line and when the hill begins, again try to keep yourself in check. Just allow the body to gradually settle into a rhythm.

Most people lose big time by going too hard in the first 5-min of a TT and then having to recover. Do that before a hillclimb and the time lost is amplified when you start the climb as recovering when you are going up is very,very hard to do.

Hi Chris, do you have an elevation map of the TT course ? Really interested as to distance, elevation and try to picture reuqired intensity for the climb.

Climb averages ~ 5% with a few ups n downs along the way.

The gpx file is very strange, like a lot of gpx files it generates a poor course profile due to poor resolution of the data.

Depending on fitness level and rider/bike mass, it'll take 23-30 min (20:xx for a very good athlete at ~5.5W/kg). So overall it would be done a touch harder than functional threshold (max 1hr power). The hill will make that happen anyway.

I rode the route the other day (albeit after riding 30k quite quickly to get there) and did the 8.4k in 27 minutes.. so im aiming for probably around 24 minutes.

my advice with uphills is to mix it up. just try and hoodwink yr legs. when you feel like givin up, do somethin weird.
and then at about 3/4 way thru (or at some point generally) up the gear two-fold and get outta the saddle for a bit. helps yr bum and gets you movin faster. And the relieff you feel when you get back in the saddle will help you with the final stage.
i agree with the peeps here that say start weakish. that vibe will gt yr rhythm set and you can start workin towardz teh awsmz. but don't wait too long before you turn on the awsmz.

and you know when you can see (or sense) the end you can step up even more. maybe even 4 times more.

Done! Got a time of 26... not bad, think I came in about 6th. The winner got 23.30, second place 25 and third place 25 something. We started at 30 second intervals and i managed to pass 6 people on the way up so im pretty happy with my effort.

After my warm up while I was waiting to start my bike fell over, and i didnt realise but it knocked the seat slightly to the left, so i was uncomfortable the whole way up!

Not as well as I could have.. I went out a bit hard early I think, i passed the guy who started before me at the 1.25k mark. I was hurting a bit on the lower slopes of the climb, but after about 2k of climbing I started feeling extremely good and was turning the pedals quite quickly.

Im actually a little disappointed as I think I could have put a bit more effort in the latter part of the climb. The only time I got out of the saddle was with 500m to go where i stood up and sprinted for the line basically.

After reading a few good reviews of Mt Mee, a mate and I finally made the trek up there yesterday. The climb was really enjoyable.. nice easy gradient with a great view. Went over to the lookout and could make out a tall building in Caloundra, the Glass House mountains, and Moreton island. We then came back to the Pit Stop café and had a good view over Brisbane.

The ride back between Dayboro and Samford Village was a mental battle.. that stretch got very boring very quickly in the heat.. next challenge might be Clear Mt when returning from Mt Mee. That would be tough!

Hi vbplease, Mt Mee is a nice climb, but there is climb off the right side of Mt Mee, Ocean View Rd, that is a much harder challenge than Mt Mee or even harder than Clear Mtn Rd. Ocean View Rd is a road off to the right just after the wedding places as you are going up Mt Mee and approx 5kms long. The initial climb up Ocean View Rd is 15% to 20% and continues to climb upto where it joins onto Townsend Rd which is a 20% descent to Mt Mee Rd. Clear Mtn Rd has fantastic views and is fun climbing, especially as very little traffic travels up Clear Mtn, which is also the case for Ocean View Rd :-)

There is another nice climb with very little traffic that goes over Upper Kedron Brook, and goes between Samford and Ferny Grove via the old Samford/Dayboro train line (it is nolonger there and is now a road) that you might be interested in. Also there is the climb from Samford to Mt Glorious via the Goat Track to Mt Nebo or directly up the main road which is a minimum of 15% for the last 2kms of a 6.6km climb :-)

I'm thinking of doing some hillclimb time trials in the future with my new bike. If I like it, I might splash out on some carbon tubulars just for the race.

I'm wondering what is considered a good wheelset for hill climbs of this nature (i.e. about 5% gradients, average speeds of 20 km/h or so).

A 404 rim is as light as my current alloy rim, however if you go for a 303 / 202 (or something like the Enve 3.4) you can get rim weights of under 300g.

Alex - any thoughts on a good wheelset for a hillclimb?

Thanks for the tips KL. Ocean View Rd might be one for a bit later when the fitness improves a bit more.. the 18% sign wasn't a very welcome site when we went past it.

Would you have a Strava link for the old train line? I had a look on wiki - interesting story behind the train line/crash.. it looks like Lanita Rd isn't continuous?

The Mt Nebo goat track doesn't look too attractive at the moment on a road bike.. lots of fallen trees etc. The steep side up to Mt Glorious from Samford is on the list to do, relatively fresh legs will be needed for that I imagine. Not overly keen to do that in a 100k+ loop.

Hi vbplease, have a look for the following roads in the Samford/Camp Mtn/Upper Kedron area ... Camp Mountain Rd, McLean Rd South, Sutton Ct, Lochinvar Rd, and Cedar Creek Rd :-)
