I've taken this week off work to get some stuff done around the house (oh yeah, and riiiiiiiidddddeeeee ). Went south along the beach this morning hoping for a nice slow relaxing ride. Paused at my midpoint and watched some boats being launched. Nice...

Then some guy tried to make it a "group ride". It was awful. "Do you ride this way often? Nice bike...how much would one of them set me back? (he almost fell over when I told him ) I'm here most mornings at this time , so if you come this way tomorrow I'll buy you a coffee..."

Eeeeeeeeeeek!! Granted, you couldn't see my wedding ring with my gloves on.

I said seeya and started riding and he started following...nasty stuff. So I put my foot down!! Headed back up the coast with a mix of road and bike path just hammering away!! Needless to say, he was nowhere to be seen. Means I won't be stopping there for a while

Sorry...just had to vent...

Now for the good stuff!!

The route I travelled was mainly road with some cyclepath thrown in. Mornings seem to be the time when all mums are out with prams, so I had to wait to overtake in a couple of spots. But...I covered the 11km in 22 minutes!!

Not quite my relaxing ride, but something good came out of it!!

This is a very valid point. Bikers are a funny bunch, on the one hand
happy to ride in groups with "authorised" companions but a little bit
stand offish at time with strangers. (don't take this personal guys
just a general observation, i'm sure members of this forum are generally more helpfull than the common biker).

Granted!, The guy you described here did sound like a bit of a pest / weedo!

What is the following/tailing ettiquette?

I quite like to tag along (20-40ms behind) a strange rider
to see if I can keep up. It's a great form of motivation for
me (providing I don't pop my knees trying.

Where is the line between acceptable and unacceptable?

In any case, I guess it's a bit like one's personal space that's being encroached upon. Except in cycling, one needs more of it on the rear end.

I thought milliseconds too. Must be my technical back ground.

Some people are naturally chatty and you couldn't shut them up with a 12 gauge but I think the asking to buy you coffee was going over board.

Maybe you should carry a phone with a camera.
Anyway, it's a good excuse to get yourself super fit so you can out ride any weirdos.

I think the hand on the shoulder when he asked me for the coffee was going overboard!!

Yet last week I rode with another bloke who was very chatty, but just carrying on his ride as normal - we just happened to go the same way. Turned out he knew some of the blokes my husband rode with on last years Albany to Perth Great Bike Ride (I had to work )!!

I don't keep the electronic training log, but am fanatical about some things. Each morning I weigh myself and record (and graph) the figures. After yesterday's "spurt" I was 1.2kg down

Maybe I'll try to find him tomorrow too!!

I usually head south straight down the freeway from Perth. Rarely see anybody most days once I'm south of South St.

Well being married too I don't mind being chatted up, well I would'nt mind, not that anyone has tried, cyclist or not. By and large i think people in Aus , are more friendly, but there's a fine line between friendly and creepy. I can only presume I fall somewhere between the two!

Hey moo... tell pospete where it happened. Maybe he will get lucky

Also - I can understand the creepy aspect, but I've heard that the physical contact is a strategy that some women fall for (it was a sexual harassment sacking case at work... 4000+ people, you expect some interesting cases). Then again, you work in IT, so you know how many socially disfunctional people there are out there... I work with a number of people with no concept of personal space etc.

Thanks guys!! I wouldn't have been able to laugh about it without you all. I considered getting the hybrid out, buying a bob, and packing the dogs in before I rode that way again. I was so close too, but then I read all these comments and don't feel I need to anymore!! Good thing too...I've got about 120kg of dog and don't fancy towing that!!

I've got 90 kg of Rottweiler. He can't come for a ride because the BOB trailer is rated at carrying about 32kg.

There are some K9 trailers around but I don't think they are designed for large dogs.

2xDanes...Maybe I could get them their own bikes?

Flamin' heck, if you've got Great Danes or Rottweilers, you don't pull them, they pull YOU. Cripes, just coz both breeds are stoopid doesn't mean you can't train them to do something useful.

Rotties no. There was a little old lady in the news who had a rotty. She came home and the poor dog was choking on something. She got it out of it's mouth and it was a human finger.
