Bike in shop

Postby sogood » Wed Feb 04, 2009 9:55 am

Just wondering what's people's experience with pushing one's ride into a shop? As much as we don't want to crowd the paths, but sometimes it's just too nerve wrecking to park or lock a bike outside.

In my experience, I have never seen anyone wheeling one in a shopping centre, although I don't see the problem as one could easily have rolled one out from K Mart. Otherwise, I've seen one guy rolling his sharp looking fixie in Sydney's Apple Store. The staffs there didn't even blink an eye. 8)

I generally only feel comfortable wheeling the bike into a bike shop (whether it's my local and dropping in for a service or just browsing in another shop). I must admit I haven't actually done it at any other kind of shop or shopping centre.

Not sure why I only feel comfortable doing this in a bike shop though.

Shopping centres get narky when you take your bike inside. If they let you do it, they have trouble justifying the exclusion of youths on their BMX bikes. They'll stop you on the grounds of "Safety", since your bike will be a hazard in an evacuation (apparently?).

Graeme

I'll see your +1 and raise it. I'm not sure why I feel that way either ;-).

Bringing the good bikes into a bike shop - no problems.
Otherwise I ride my (lets say crappy) city bike if I want to pop into a shop - so have no problem locking it up outside.

I guess it would depend on the shop and the bike - on the otherhand the attitude you have would count - by showing that you are meant to be there and it is nothing unusual I think you can get away with a lot.

scuse me, I am just going to rest my ride up against the (most expensive) wines you have in the shop...

Often ride my Dyno Roadster to my local bar and park it in the front window while I drink...

Does that count? :?

I take my bike into any shop that it will fit. Banks have large foyers and I've never been asked to remove it. The only places that arc up are the larger centres like we$tfield.

It would've increased Apple's hipness factor or they've hired an actor to walk in there with a fixed gear... Just like they (supposedly) hired actors to line up when new products are released to create "hype".

A lot of shopping centres have sign's on the door(let's be honest here, me included) that people simple don't read and they usually include thinks like no skate boards, no bicycles and others.
Might pay to check the shopping centre you wish to enter to check that. :)

As for individual shops it probably depends on the shop. The only shop I take my bike into is the loacal LBS even when only asking a question, they don't mind. :D

The townhouse complex has no bicycles signs but I'll be damned if I walk my bike down the drive when it's a legitimate road vehicle.

That's a blatant rumour from MSFT and Sony!

AAPL doesn't need to hire people for those events.

Oh no, they are learning from some of those Asian shopping complexes. Their rules are so pathetic, to the point of banning photo taking within and outside of the complex, even with camera phones. I got into a heated argument once in Taipei 101.

But coming back to our local Westfield and similar, maybe an excuse to bring the bike to Kmart's bike section for tyre fitting would work.

As long as they don't escort you to Kmart and wait until you leave the bike with them. Does the phrase "OMG" mean anything to you?

Personal opinion only, but as much as possible I try and respect shops, shopping centres, and businesses rules as when people come to my house I expect them to follow my rules.

As the old saying goes "In Rome do as the Romans do" :) or something like that..

Now, if a bunch of riders all dressed up in Roman costumes...

Seriously though, if the cyclist is prepared to spend big by putting down an AMEX Black card on the counter, do you think the shop keeper would boot the customer out?

i would just normally leave it out the front of the shop and keep my eye on it the whole time, if not ask the check out person to keep an eye on it. :)

Wheeling a bike into a bike shop, I always think I'm going to clip a showroom bike and cause a domino rolling effect with $200,000 worth of CF :)

While your lbs is probably Ok, and many small stores wouldn't complain, if you brought your bike into my shop I would politely ask you to leave it outside. I hate litigeous society, but the truth is if some kid or dim old lady knocks it over how will you feel? And if said kid/lady rips their dress or trips over your bike (even of their own stupidity) they will sue the store owner first for allowing it to be their, and I know my insurance would be void!

Its a sad world we live in, but I don't care for any of the others.

On a lighter note, can I park my car in your loungeroom?

I might put up a sign like that....but since I dont have a Coffee machine or access to free puppies I will change it to:

"Unattended children will be given a large glass of red cordial and some lollies just as you leave"

Cheers
Dave.
