Every time I boot my PC I get this message

NFI what program it is. So much for friendly user interfaces.

[when you push OK, it just goes away, it doesn't bring up another window]

I used to have a PC that would come up with the following error message:

Error! Keyboard not found! Press any key to continue.

I'd press a key and away it would go

But in one of your posts, I think you mentioned you were living in a tent. Not exactly 'the finer things in life'.

(My dream is to sell the house, build a large motor home , tell the Govt to go fark itself, and just travel around Australia until I find a really great place to live - the wife tells me to get real...).

I think I was at the time, but I'm in a house until June.

My dream is to load the bike up and go around Australia, then NZ, then South America.

Riding around Australia, I could probably drop in and hassle a few forum members whilst I am it :D

Speaking of hassle, I think we hijacked another thread :D

In that case...

My home PC spends the first minute or two doing "machine reg checks", and until it is finished won't launch any apps.

New motherboard is sitting nearby, ready for the reinstall of windows and all the frikkin drivers - at least a weekend lost :(

All my Linux PCs and Apple Mac are running fine :D

The only Windows in this house are for letting the air in or out.

Don't you love those virus and junk on Windows. :D

Mike, I think this is a symtop of some form of malware.

Scan your machine with a good anti-virus and spyware scanner (adaware/spybot S&D) or better yet, re-install.

You should see the crap on my computer. I have custom written software to tunnel thru the internet or thru a client site out to the internet and then into my companies network. From there I use Critrix to get remote login to their computers. Firewalls etc etc. Hey its 10am and I haven't done anything productive yet.

It might be google talk.

Spybot got me thinking, it brings up that Windows firewall and virus checkers are disabled. But this should be correct, I think, as I'm running Symantec AntiVirus and Check Point Integrity Flex (think its Zonelabs rebaged) for firewall.

Looking in Windows Security Centre, the options for enabling and disabling the firewall are set to no and are greyed out, which I think is consistant with having a 3rd party product.

I've also noticed that that pesky itunes is noted as an exception and iTunesHelper.exe is running. Back in the days of Windows95 you could go Ctrl-Alt-Delete and eye check every executible running to see if there was anything dodgey, I got it down to about 5. Now there's around 100 things running.

And this PC of mine has so much custom work crap on it, for example automatic updates are disabled, because it has a custom program to manage updates, so employees of my company get their updates as deemed appropriate by HO. The reason for such a decision is to make sure that automatic updates from Microsoft and other sources don't interfere with the custom programs on this machine etc etc.

Yes, most nasties will hide themselves from Task Manager, there is a good utility from sysinternal / wininternals its called tasklist or pslist I can't remember the exact name but it often shows programs that wont show up under task manager

Mikebytes, you are correct if you have symantec AV and a Zone Alarms firewall windows programs will be disabled. Especially if it is a work PC as most IT Security(ones with a brain) wouldn't use windows default programs as better programs are available.

That error could be one of 1 000 000 different programs that use logins. True a friendlier GUI would have told you that but a lot of programs aren't friendly even for IT professionals. I dont think it would be adware or malware cause it is visible to you and it is asking for a id and pwd, but it could be.
If this happens on boot it should be shown in the windows program "msconfig". I'm assuming WinXP.
Select Start \ Run and type "msconfig" Press Enter. The far right tab of the app is startup. This should list all programs to start at boot. Most have file paths next to them so they are identifiable. If your not sure of them I would uncheck 1 at a time and reboot and if the error goes away thats it if not renable the startup app and go onto the next one. If you get any other errors renable it also.

If the error only just started you would have to think of any newly installed apps that have been installed it could be that. You said its a business pc so it probably also gets programs sms to it through the network that you dont know about. May have to check with your work IT.
