1 saved melon, thanks to my helmet
Postby Kev365428 » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:31 pm
Not wanting to re-ignite the compulsory helmet debate again, but I wouldn't be caught dead without one, regardless of the type of riding you're doing.

Glad to see it did the job and you're around to show us the pictures.

Think about taking part in this:

I did for my far less extreme crash last year. They come to see you and the interview only takes 30 mins. May end up helping to save someone's life one day.
Get better quickly.

Where you helmet is damaged, is a part of the brain that isn't protected that well. Whatever you paid for that helmet, it was a bargain.

Not good to read about your stack. Your helmet obviously did sterling service and at least the researchers will make some good out of it. The only other plus I can see is that you might shake off the black cat lead now.Kev365428 wrote:Haven't had a reall good look as yet, but I think it's only superficial - bar tape, scratched pedals/levers etc.
Will have to wait until I can ride again to check out wheels/steering etc.

Busted ribs are not fun, so I hope you get over them quick smart. Here's wishing Chuck and the other guy heal quick too.

The only thing that helmet cost me was a little of my time.mikesbytes wrote:Ouch

For the 2007 'Gong ride, the organisers where giving away gifts based on the amount of money raised. I had a choice of the helmet or a camelback.
Looks like I made the right choice.

I bought a Rosebank helmet for my daughter and they offer a replacement helmet provided the damage occured in a crash, you return the original helmet to them and you participate in their research questionnaire. The only real way to test a helmet properly is to strap it to a real head and crash it in a realistic, uncontrolled way.
If your brand doesn't have a return program, do any of the good brands?
Cheers,
David

Damn, that's a pretty good deal. Considering they are designed for a single impact only and are supposed to break apart.bigfriendlyvegan wrote:Do the manufacturers have a return policy?

I have a rosebank vista but all it says inside is "if helmet experiences a severe blow, destroy and replace it".

I've already sent an email off to UNSW to see if they are interested in it, but if I don't hear back from them, I'll definitely contact Netti.
Thansk for the well wishes Dave. As far as your kids are concerned, I hope the pics of the busted helmet had a good influence on them. If not, get an old helmet and a hammer and tell them to hit it until breaks. Then they'll get some idea of how much force is required for this much damage.
Cheers all,
Kev.

He needs a sample size of 300. He has one of mine as well.
My understanding of the netti replacement program is that the local retail outlet has to destroy the helmet. I'd be asking them (insistently) to instead allow you to donate the helmet to the UNSW program. I think the guy's name is Dr Toh Yen Pang?

Sorry to hear of your off but glad you are okay and that helmet came to the party.
Take care and hope to see you zooming up the BJ rankings again soon.

The guys hit the ground pretty hard and I am glad that you guys are going to be OK.
Helmets do save lives, I had a similar situation many years ago where I destroyed the helmet but saved my life.
cheers
Glenn
