ZOOM Handlebar Safety Recall / Affected CELL Road Bikes

Postby JV911 » Tue Mar 03, 2009 10:52 am

ZOOM HANDLEBAR RECALL.
CELL Bikes are doing a voluntary recall of certain batches of road bikes sold between mid-September 2008 and 27th February 2009.
Models that may be affected include: S2200, Blade, Swift and Team.
Please check the Serial Number under the bottom bracket to see if it falls between the following numbers:

S2200................QL8C0201 to QL8C0400
BLADE/SWIFT...Q18C0051 to Q18C0300
SWIFT 2009......Q18J0001 to Q118J0150
TEAM 2008........IR8C0411 to IR8C0560
TEAM 2009........IR810001 to IR810200

The ZOOM handlebar factory have identified the problem as being the cable groove on the top of the handlebar as being too deep, and hence possibly weakening the handlebar.
If you have purchased one of these models in this period, please DO NOT continue to ride and contact us immediately to organise a replacement handlebar.
If you know anyone who has bought a bike fitted with similar ZOOM handlebars, you should tell them to have them checked with their purchasing dealer.

Please contact us at info@this link is broken or call us at 02 9565 1899 and provide us with your serial number to arrange replacement handlebars.
If you are able to bring your bicycle to our retail shop for a changeover, we must arrange a scheduled time to do the replacement.

Interesting; my s/n is JR8C0509

Guess the first character must indicate a batch number or similar. Might email CELL to check... or maybe it's a good excuse to buy some carbon bars... just to be sure

Looking on the bright side, at least you're in Sydney so can have the replacement bars fitted for you ;)

Maybe the email had a typo?

The site has it as J for the team 2008's:

S2200................QL8C0201 to QL8C0400
BLADE/SWIFT...QI8C0051 to QI8C0300
SWIFT 2009......QI8J0001 to QI8J0150
TEAM 2008........JR8C0411 to JR8C0560
TEAM 2009........IR810001 to IR8I0200

Dammit! Ah well, I was planning on riding the rain bike this week anyway... Just hope I have new bars in time for the state bike week stuff on the weekend!

Although, I was under the impression that the Team 2008 was the version with a bright blue and black paintjob, rather than metallic blue. Also the specifications table for the Team lists the handlebar as being Promax brand, not Zoom...

This is all getting very confusing...

Oh dear... hope they sort that issue out before mine leave in the post!

The real question is what to do with the old bars. Modify to make a bike stand? Towel rail? Abstract art installation..?

I've got a Cell Blade but Feb 08 so should be OK. However I looked for the serial number to double check and couldn't fint it. The recall notice says to look under the bottom bracket for the S/N but nothing there. So, where's the serial number?????:?

Should be stamped into the frame, on the underside of the bottom bracket shell (ie, the actual frame)

Hmm, crank bolts are a little dirty :?

G'day guys,

Here's a revised Serial Number List:

S2200................QL8C0201 to QL8C0400

BLADE/SWIFT...QI8C0051 to QI8C0300

Thanks for your patience. If any of you find a creative way to use the affected ZOOM bars, please send us photos and we might be able to make it worth your while.

G'day Nate,

Have we already sorted out that 26.0 stem for you?

If it happens again to anyone else, let us know and we'll flog the offending perpetrator accordingly.

Just wondering - did you pick up the bars from the store, or were they posted?
