Wool jerseys

Postby ghettro » Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:47 pm

Im just looking at some old school wool jerseys on ebay for fun, what are they like to wear compared to modern acrylic jerseys? Do they get hot in summer?

Thanks
Jon

Be careful about spending a lot of money on wool sports jerseys.
I think they can cause itch +++ in some people. :(
I have a long sleeve wool thermal (Mountain Designs brand)
It looks nice and feels great but after a while makes me itch just a bit.
It does feels better then polypropylene in warm conditions and does not retain sweat odours as much so i sort of prefer it as a "thermal" clothing.

Ditto - itchy, particularly when hot.

The structure of natural wool fibres is such that some people feel an itchy sensation. It is a personal thing and varies with every person. One of my friends, a competitive MTBer, will wear nothing else... but that's just him. If wool is going to make you itch, any wool garment will (so it's fairly easy to test). Wool jerseys are also more expensive to make and more difficult to print.

Lads,
Agree and dissagree. Old sports jerseys would probably suck big time in the itchy department but I have IceBreaker and GroundEffects gear which is 100% merino in a very fine weave as chill stoppers and they are awesome. No itch, don't smell and look pretty damn good.
Thanks heaps.

There is knit out there called Sportswool, a combo between merino and man made fiber. Icebreaker superfine doesn't itch. Check out the thickness of the merino/wool fibers (micron), go low to prevent itch. I'm confident Rapha merino base layer doesn't itch either.

I got a cheap Descente branded merino s/sleeve jersey from Probikekit about a year ago for $60 or so. I quite like it as a material - I have a slight sensation of something being different - maybe a miiiiild itch, but it's nothing that bothers me. It is cool in the heat, wicks quite well and doesn't pong like the beejezus. The build/stitch quality is a bit pith-poor on this Descente top though and it has split at the seams in a couple of places.

I might invest one of the merino/nylon blend examples from Ground Effect sometime soon.
