Doesn't sildenafil limit your cardiac output? It does dilate pulmonary arterioles, but unless one has a respiratory disorder or is at altitude, breathing/ventilation does not limit exercise performance. So unless you're at altitude, where oxygen diffusion is a limiting factor, it's counter productive*, but even if you are at altitude, it's a trade off. Limiting your cardiac output and increasing your pulmonary exchange will very quickly see your cardiac output become the limiting factor, which will limit performance.
Can't remember if it lessens your maximum stroke volume or maximum heart rate.
*Never ever discount the placebo effect however.
