Cycleway lane markings

Are we expected to treat cycleway lane markings like car driving?

i.e.; You have the whole of the lane unless overtaking.

Or are the lines a little bit more grey, something like "keep as left as possible but if you have right of way then the lanes are there to prevent confusions.

I know on the M7 if people ride two abreast the second one is slighlty in the other oncoming lane. (and rarely look behind!).

In WA, bikes should only be ridden in single file on a cycleway. These are shared paths though as we don't tend to have "dedicated" bike only paths. Instead, we have to smile sweetly as a mob of ipod clad pedestrians blocks the whole path :x

And don't forget the parked 4WDs. There is a couple of dedicated bike paths for cyclists only. One is in South Perth, and the pedestrians will abuse you when riding on it

The only abuse i have got here is from the foreigners who don't know what a cycle lane is for, they're probably from countries where it's legal to marry a sheep.
