Bottles anyone?

Postby toolonglegs » Wed Jun 10, 2009 6:48 am

Today I rode over to watch the 61EME CRITERIUM DU DAUPHINE LIBERE...it was passing about 30km from home and was the only day I could get to go watch. So I rode east and meet the ever friendly Gendarmes who I thought would shot me if I didn't get off my bike...a bit different to the Giro a month a go  .Wasn't very exciting...they had only been on the road for an hour and the break had gone away...but saw Cadel in yellow and Alberto.Didn't recognise anyone else and as it was flat they came and went pretty quick. After wards I rode back along the course souvenir hunting...did pretty well as well...although fitting 16 bottles plus the two I had somewhere on my body was fun...could only fit 3 in my back pack so the rest had to be stuffed somewhere! .Then when the rain started hammering down I started heading home to get the kids from school..realised I wasn't really sure where I was or how far I had come along the race route or how far it was to home so had to dig very deeply for 90 minutes to get home in time to get the kids from school.45 of those minutes where in a huge storm with lightning crashing around nice and close!.Kept a nice 38-40 kmph average for 80 minutes which hurt a bit and made it with ten to spare...nice little ride turned into nice big ride :D .

The break...which stayed away containing the new race leader.

The bunch...missed snapping Cadel (shitaki little camera!) but got contador.

Great haul, and an eventful day to watch the Dauphine Libere. A bit silly of Cadel to lose his Jersey, but I guess you have to choose your battles. Tonight's (our time) TT should be good too, although I'm not convinced he'll get back in yellow myself.

What am I am going to do with them?...use them of course :D .I already have a Liquigas bike and Rabobank helmet  (wasn't planned that way as both bike and helmet where warranty and thats all they had!).
Chopping block training it was...took me about 20min to get a rough idea where I was...after one road finished in a dead end! (pretty rare thing around here as there are roads going everywhere!).
I was nearly dry by the time I got home...but I was a bit tired...bit hard to pace yourself when you dont know how far it is to go  .
I think Cadel may have been right to lose his jersey...he is less than a minute down and now doesn't have to defend unless he wins the ITT today...today will be a very showing test for the big names...just looked at google.Bourg-Les-Valence is only 130km away  ...nah might be pushing it as kids don't have school today...but they do love going to races and waving at all the motorbikes  .

out of curiosity if you didn't pick them up, does someone go back after to collect them or do bicycle races turn roads into rubbish tips?

Not really sure...I rode back maybe 20km and after the first 10 I didn't find any...although I was only an hour or less into the day's stage.Probably stays as rubbish

With the Tour de France they have a big clean-up operation following the peleton from what I understand. Not sure about other races but.

That's pretty irresponsible (and pisspoor effort) if they just litter the roadside everytime there's a bike race.

It's possible clean up would go thru latter as signs etc still had to be taken down,...would have had those as well but a bit hard to carry on my bike :D .

From what I understand the big races would have a cleanup procedure afterwards, that goes back and scours the race course. Or at least, the walking and running events I've seen do, so I assume bike races would too. So should most smaller races, and hopefully clubs that run races have the same attitude of responsibility.

It's when you get the weekly training rides, tour wannabes that chuck gel wrappers, tubes and banana peels and the like that irk me. Because the pros do it, so should I. Sigh. Bloody litterers. Once you joina team that pays millions to race you, then yeah, go right ahead.

I wonder if an empty bottle disposal had ever caused an accident. I can imagine someone playing dirty and spoking a competitor with their empty bottle.

No one gives you a hard time for recreating the 30's with your bikes and outifts, and the one guy that did had to make a full and unreserved apology.

Think about that before you go flinging excrement on other people's bike culture. It's getting hard to keep giving you some slack.

I wonder how long before we start seeing paper water bottles designed with the cyclistiosa in mind?
