Almost hit by a car - nice footage too

Postby Nate » Wed Sep 30, 2009 8:30 pm

Its now obvious why i ride with a camera!
I explained to the driver why he needs to look for cyclists when he decides to cross into a bike lane(no blinker etc) at the next set of lights.

sigh.. as soon as i spot a RH turner like that i assume everyone's gonna move around him without looking.

most drivers don't bother with head checks.

Wow! Close.

I reckon he saw you though, seemed like he knew you were there and squeezed his way in.

What an idiot.
He would have had to wait what, five seconds for that guy to turn right?
Good on you for being vigilant, it seems from the video that you pre-empted his move?

I hate having to second guess on what moves people will/may make. Guess it's the same reason why I want a camera fitted to my bike as people are much the same here as well.

I'm all for catching the buggers - but does having them on camera do any good? It seems you need to end up almost paraplegic before anyone takes any action, and even then it's touch and go? Or am I too pessimistic?

Congratulations for seeing what was going to happen and moving left before he cut you off!

Could you share some details of your bike camera setup/config?

I'm considering picking up the $150 Aldi bike cam tomorrow, but it is only 640x480 resolution so not sure it is really useful...

You're not going to see the police (who are happy to hand out fines but mostly speeding) or RTA (who seem to careless [turn a blind eye] even though they have the powers to fine road users) at every corner but having video of drivers behaving badly can help if they crash into you or if you want sending it to police.

As a person who also uses buses it really p***** me off when people park in bus zones which is as bad as those who park in or use cycle lanes as they own piece of road.

It's called situational awareness and it's an integral part of operating any vehicle (including or perhaps especially bicycles) on the road. If you don't work on it then you're destined to have a "traffic incident" sooner rather than later. Seems like Nate has a pretty well developed sense of it.

What's the story with your Clio172HHH clip? I thought it must have been a closed road for someone to be driving so skillfully like that with tyres screeching at every corner, but then some damn fool comes the wrong way on the race track with his car towing a trailer! Idiot!

lol - they were really really bad tyres & would screech at anything
coupled with a very low mounted camera & some "adjustments" to the playback speed - it makes it look quicker than what it was ;)

An idiot is born every second and then they get given a drivers license... :(
Close call Nate, glad you made it through in one piece.

I think we've all had similar close calls. The most common ones I've seen are the idiots who mis-judge your speed and do a left turn just as they pass you (instead of slowing down and waiting a few seconds). I've lost count of the number of times I've had to stand on the brakes hard to miss those numpties... :x

Glad you sussed the moron before it got messy Nate.

Am I the only one who thinks moron did it deliberately? With the parked car it's not like he coulda gone anywhere.

Nice apexing in the Clio too mate :D , what stretch of road?
