Competition - Black Cat Awards (flat tyres) - 2010

Postby Kev365428 » Tue Jan 05, 2010 8:09 am

Per Mikes request (and a good one it was too), here are the rules for this years comp, and like last years, they have been blatently plagiarised from previous years.

1. You can only claim one puncture if you have not ridden the bike before discovering the next puncture. That is, breaking the valve stem off whilst pumping doesn't mean 2 flats. However, a double flat (both front and rear tyres at the same time) can be counted as two.
2. It has to be a flat to your bike, fixing someone elses flat doesn't count, and it must be on a bike. No car, pram, soccor ball, or blow-up doll flats please.
3. Flat must of occurred between January 1st 2010 and December 31st 2010 inclusive
4. To have punctures listed in this competition, your must be a forum member or an immediate family member who has been the subject of amusing/scary/blonde moment stories on this forum. Or have slipped me a $50.
5. All other contetious points that aren't addressed by these rules will be decided by me. If you don't like my ruling, read the last sentence of Rule #4 and ask me again. :D

As I got one this morning, I'm happy to kick off proceedings.

+1

Noticed the rear tyre was getting flat on my commute this morning. A small hole was evident in the tube, like it was caused by a piece of tyre casing wire, but I was unable to find anything in the tyre itself.

Can't really complain as it's been almost 8 months since my last flat.

Aaah, glad someone started this up. You were on a good run Kev! What's your secret? I'm thinking of running tyre liners on my commuter this year. That may stop the number of punctures.

+1 - discovered the flat the day after my "new years day sweat out the toxins" ride.

start total = 0 +1
50 kms (50kms)

New total = 1 (AT) 50kms per flat

Not happy about the fact that I started this thread, and I'm going to be the most prolific poster.

+ 1

The same place in the tube as yesterdays. Must have missed whatever caused yesterdays flat, cause it also caused on today.

Back on the M5 ??? I've never seen so much cr*p on it as I found yesterday. It's bottle-smashing season and the sweepers must be on hols.

It's the same around Pyrmont & North Sydney too. A large amount of glass remains from New Years that hasn't been swept up as yet. I did see a council worker this morning using a broom in Summer Hill though so there is hope...

Hadn't been on the M5 since last May........until last Thursday. I rode through what looked like a tyre casing graveyard (just under Moorebank Rd), and I'm betting that's where I picked up the cause of the last 2 flats.

I vow never to ride on the M5 again!!!

Way too much glass and crap on the M2 at the moment (esp near Windsor Rd citybound). I fired off a complaint to M2's web form on 21/12 and got a reply yesterday. The usual canned response.

And don't get me started about that! I reckon the M2 is safer than the backstreets of Chatswood. At least the cars stay in their lanes for the most part. Chatswood soccer mum's in 4WDs on the other hand....

Has a date been announced yet for when the M2 will be closed to cyclists?

From the 2009 thread before this one was created:

snark on Jan 1 wrote:4.37km into 2010, and my first flat. Also my first ever front flat. It looks like a pinch flat, but I don't recall hitting anything before it went flat although I was riding in a bike lane that had a bit of debris in it. Double-checked the tire and no signs of a puncture that I can find...

and

snark on Jan 3 wrote:On the Amy's ride today, just riding along in Ocean Grove and I hear tell-tale "flub, flub, flub" sound from the back. Looks like a puncture (my first non-pinch-flat) and I can see a small gash on the inside of the GP4000S as well. No debris on the outside, but a fair gash there too. Fix that, jump on the bike, peddle off for all of half a metre and I notice that the front is flat too  Same thing, but a bigger gash though. Fix that, back on the bike and peddle off again.

What are the rules for a double puncture (ie, front and back at the same time)? Does that count as one or two? The rules don't see to spell that out clearly. The first rule says "You can only claim one puncture if you have not ridden the bike before discovering the next puncture" - I did move a little bit and it was the other end :)

That makes 2 or 3 flats in about 70km this year so far...

What's the definitive 2010 ruling on if that's two or three flats so far?

Cheers,
Simon.

Simon, that's 3 flats in my book, and that makes you the equal leader. Congrats.

The Flat God (or should that be devil?) finally caught up with me last night.

+1 Last night picked up a large piece of glass from Kings Park I think.

Mind you, it was the first flat in my rear wheel Conti GP4000S in 6,900 km.
Reckon I'll get at least 8,000 km from this tyre, all on the rear wheel. I betcha that would be impossible for someone over 80 kgs. (or living in Sydney) :P

I'm starting to hate this thread already.

+1

Wet commute this morning was compounded by the "Psst, psst, psst" sound coming from the rear about 40 minutes into the ride.
A small fragment of glass had snuck through.

Looks like I'm back up with the leaders.

Got my first flat since getting the roadie last monday, lucky and unlucky because it happened while turning into my street after a ride. hefty glass shard into the front tire, was flat before I got the front door open

First one in around 1800km's so I cant complain I guess, alot of my riding is on the shared path, suburbs and city and im allways dodging glass. I do my best to avoid riding in the rain, maybe thats part of my good run. Allthough I plan to get some wet weather gear and mudguards for this winter, so it will be interesting to see how my flat rate goes.

So what do people use for patches? I've not had much luck with the Lezyne glueless patch kit I bought recently. Two of the tubes I patched yesterday are still leaking from under the patch. I've used glueless patches many times before, with no problem. Maybe it's just the Lezyne brand? The holes themselves were quite small, nothing major at all.

The ones I have are branded X-Tech. In a small plastic box with a black label. It was my first time using a stick on patch and it seemed to work ok, it held pressure overnight and for a 30km ride the next day. Ive taken that tube out now because I put a new tire on the front so I can rotate out the rear so put a new tube in as well. On a tour I think I'd still take an old fashioned patch kit but for day rides I do have new faith in these stick on things. Allthough I did the patching at home and I allways carry a spare tube so im only ever going to patch my second flat on a ride.

Cheers
