Agreed.

He took the Strava KOM's a bit too seriously but how about we let it go. There's no point further ridiculing the guy. And I think Scott did the right thing by blocking Brendan to diffuse the situation.

Yep well that's social media for you. Everyone wants to have a dig. It will go on for days until something else pops up to distract everyone's attention.

Life must be good for those who keep wanting to stick the knife in. And there were plenty of those on there.

I’ve taken your beating. There’s been close to 40 of them. There is something seriously wrong with you if you can’t recognise that your actions are causing me pain, and I don’t know how to get through to you to stop.
Oh come on. That guy is just too funny. 8)

And by making said remarks any competitive person is just going to head out and take as many as possible from him.

I had some to and fro with another rider locally, was good fun taking back the KOM and then losing it to him - until a good rider came along and took it from both of us and there was no chance of getting it back. Said good rider had deliberately gone and snatched half a dozen in the area too, well out of the way for him, but such is life. I'm not that competitive (or fast) to go and get them back.

Yeah I dunno, the whole KOM thing on Strava is a bit of a joke really. I had one for a couple of years and no-one could beat me on it because I got it on a day that had a perfect tail wind that rarely happens and I still busted my gut to get it. A mate took it off me about 6 months ago a few days after he got onto Strava. There are at least half a dozen guys I ride with who aren't on Strava and would have all the KOMs between them if they were, probably without even trying. Just a bit of competitive fun really and not something to get worked up about. Anyway it's all been said a hundred times in the past.

They were ridiculous comments true.
However he is a real person.
I read some of the comments saying he had a bit of a profile in the cycling community in Melb.
I did a search under his name and Dandenong and there it was he came up.

He got carried away by the whole strava thing and made some stupid comments.
There has now been a complete character assassination and I feel a bit sorry for him.
Anyway I can't say I haven't got stuck into people in the past (hopefully not to that extent) so I'm just expressing a hypocritical counterpoint.

I am still trying to understand the joke. If I snag a Strava KOM, what have I actually won? My Strava name gets a mention in cyberspace that could be superseded five minutes later, and that mention (however temporary) only has meaning for me, because I am the only person that connects my proper name to my Strava name. So why does it give me such a boost to get a KOM (or a high place on a large leaderboard), and why is it so deflating to lose one?

It's actually a very clever bit of marketing because it taps into people's natural competitiveness. I do know people who have deliberately gone out to knock off a single KOM and I have done it myself. It's really just an online game though, only applicable to people who are 'in' the game and open to all sorts of exploitation. I don't know how their business case is panning out because most of their user base probably doesn't bother upgrading to a premium account but they're still around so I guess it's going OK for them. I've noticed I'm getting a bit more spam from them lately so they might be struggling a bit, who knows...

If you have a KOM and think that means you're the fastest person to ever ride that segment, then you're deluding yourself. But you are the fastest 'player' who has ridden it, so we like to hang onto that feeling even though it's effectively meaningless.

It's a bit like people who play Guitar Hero thinking they are awesome guitarists because they can play the top level and get through a song with no bum notes. In actual fact being able to play guitar is a handicap in that game :) OK not really the same thing but you get what I mean.

It would be overstating to say that I sympathize with Brendan, but I have got at least a glimmer of an idea of where he is coming from.
I have been guilty of Strava sniping (not lately because my form has been a bit dusty), and I have my own code of what is OK and what is not. I don't mind getting help from the wind (everybody else has the same chance) but I won't draft behind a motor vehicle. Once, I got a KOM that I hadn't earned when the satellite was ridiculously kind to me - and I cancelled the ride! Just to underline that no good deed goes unpunished, I turned in a ride a few days later on the same segment that was fast enough for the KOM, but the satellite timed me long and "awarded" me a second place.

I won't go after a KOM that someone has just taken - I think basic sportsmanship requires a "honeymoon" period of a couple of weeks minimum - and I won't go after a KOM if the incumbent only has the one. I did this once unwittingly, and I regretted it as soon as I realized. Eventually the KOM holder I displaced managed to shave a bit off his time and draw level with me, and I was genuinely delighted when he did so.

My way of avoiding the KOM angst is to be too fat and slow to ever get one. That way no-one will ever be able to steal one from me.

They need to be obscure or I need to be in a bunch to figure in any here.
Plenty of national level cyclists (who tend not to GAF about them anyway) make it unrealistic for a middle aged never was.

I'm not in the top 100 of any kom I've ever looked at. I know one guy who has a kom. Not a problem I'm ever likely to have. We are only competing against ourselves and that me is always younger than this me. If that makes sense.

Well, you know what development backlogs are like... ;) I know it's an old one. I'm not on Strava so I'm not really bothered - just seems a bit pointless all the squabbling over a little digital graphic. Okay, if it was a 20km climb, then you'd be a little bit annoyed - but those tend to all be held by pro riders.

I actually think its quite sad that this guy's sense of self worth is tied up in something so transitory as a strava KoM

Nah, I'm old & fat & slow & I still have 2 KoM's. All you need to do is go for a ride along some obscure gravel roads & there you go. Still if someone wants to go out & take them, kudos to them.

I was top 10 on a couple of obscure segments till the NRS went through - at twice the pace

I'm in the top 10 for quite a few. Advantage of living in a semi-rural area. I dare say I could probably go out and grab a couple back. Just can't be bothered really.

Approaching a pinch point on a shared path. Rolling very slow (about 12 k/ph) behind two women with 2 dogs. Decided not to ding & just let them hear my freewheel instead. Large dog on long leash is totally startled by me & immediately goes in to threatening attack mode. Straining on the leash, aggressive barking & showing me her teeth. Owner struggling to hold her back. She says it's OK she wont bite you. A completely unsocialised dog on a shared path. :x

Being old and never has, I decided chasing KOMs was not realistic. Never the less. There is a 9km segment that is on my occasional weekend ride that I used to measure my fitness. My improvement on it gave me the confidence to go out one blustery morning and take the KOM :D . I admit, gave me a little pride. Fast forward 14 months I got 2 seconds off my KOM time in spite of a headwind. I actually thought I had beat it, as I smashed all the uphill parts, so took it a little easy on the downhills. Replacing my compact with a proper chainset soon, so I will give it another go.
