After starting up cycling again (been going for approx 3 months now) I'm starting to see my averages climb.
When I started I could barely average 28kph over 35km and yesterday I averaged 29.4 over 75km (beach rd so only 400m of climbing over the total distance). My next goal over the next month is to keep increasing my longest ride by 10km until I reach the century. I could probably get out and do one now without too much trouble but I want to be comfortable and also maintain a solid average. I am itching to go out and try climbing a proper hill though. I think I might go out and have a spin up the 1 in 20 one weekend morning.

That was my plan too, but I found the idea a bit daunting and kept putting it off. Ended up giving it a go as a detour on the way to work one Monday morning . It's a great little road.Kemp wrote: I am itching to go out and try climbing a proper hill though. I think I might go out and have a spin up the 1 in 20 one weekend morning.

Did my first 100km today, all by myself. Took 4:24, averaging a pretty lousy 23km/hr. I think part of this was due to new tyres, I traded my normal tyres for some Gatorskins due to a run of punctures, they feel much stronger but they are soooo heavy.

4 weeks ago I got myself my first geared roadie, today I did my first 100km ride (114 or so) and climbed 1600m.
Didn't break any speed records, clocked in at 4:54 but still quite pleased as there were a couple of serious climbs in there and much of the route was unkown to me, so I was a bit cautious descending.

I did my first 200km in a week - 3km over that. Now I'm onto the next target to take that up to 250km, then 300km later.
Went on the M7 for the first time - very nice.

I particpated in the Melbourne ride to conquer cancer on the weekend which was my first ride above 60km. I was really happy with my effort, only stopping at the pitstops every 25km and maintaining an average of 22km. The hills were more than I expected.
