Well it took me all weekend But I clocked up 100km's. I feel really good about it. But I do want to plan a 100km ride in one hit soon. From when I started riding in january this year till now I have dropped nearly 14kg. Now I weigh 90.8kg'sThis is the lightest I have been in about 15 years. Gotta love cycling :D :D :D

Great effort. I can relate to the feeling of achievment you get.
I started riding only 8 weels ago and have not been on a bike for 35 years.
The aim is to do what your doing and get myself back into respectable shape.
It definatly works as I have droped 9kg so far.
And I am hooked. Every day I look forward to my ride. I don't know what it is but it is addictive.
I am so close to hitting the 50 klm mark in a single ride and that is a milestone I am looking forward to cracking.
Got new (Schwable Big Apple) road based tyres fitted to my MTB today so I should get a smoother & quieter ride.
The great thing about this thread is the motivation we get from everyones achievments, large or small. :D

I was hoping to do a 60km group ride this weekend, with LBS. But the wife informs me that I am on babysitting duties on saturday morning. So I will definetly try for next weekend

How about for all newbies (WA) to meet up on a day to see how far we(newbies) can go as far as a group? Could be a hill climb / long flats? Certainly keen ;) Hit me up and I'll probably start another thread in the WA section. Peace out

PS: 4 months of cycling and managing to do 46kms non stop with climbs and flats avg ~ 29 km/h with my cycling group. they grilled me hard

Im actually with my group's "developmental" group. Lowest end of the tier :D The trasitional group, 1 above my tier , averages like 30-33ishkm/h. Concerning the hills, i think its the welshpool, kalamunda, and mundaring wier hills that my group rides. They do it on sundays, but alas' , im not that fit yet :(

W00T! 4 1/2 months ago I could barely manage 5 k's. Today I did my first (metric) ton! 107k's solo. 5 hours including bakery and map reading stops, and water bottle refill at Cressy primary school. The last 20-25k's were so slow I was almost going backwards, but I did it.
4 1/2 months ago I wanted to be able to cycle for 30k's without a rest. 1-2 months ago I was hoping for 50k's by the end of June and 100 by the end do December. I need to stop setting such achievable goals and push myself a bit harder it seems.

Stand up and cheer all nOObie forum users,
for today Spork and Novice have achieved Greatness! :D :D :D
Spork reach his first 100k ride. Well done mate.
I achieved my first 50k non stop solo ride. (52.61 klm (AT) 22.1 kph average in 2hrs 22 minutes)
Not something I would have thought possible 8 weeks ago for a 50 year old fat bloke weighing 143kg.
I got home with my bike covered in worms stuck to the frame (it rained last night),
I had numb nuts, sore knees, a sore backside, and you couldn't wipe the smile off my face. :D
My wife thinks its time to call the blokes with white coats and mattress lined truck.

Having said all that, it wiped me out for the rest off the day.
So I am wondering, as my aim is weight loss, am I better to do my normal daily ride of 20klm at a faster cadence, and feel okay, or strive for distances on weekends and feel totaly wasted afterwards. As it stands, I do an average of 100 klm per week (Mon-Fri) then try a longer ride on Saturday with Sunday as a rest day. Not so sure the longer rides over 40 or 50 klm are good for me if they really wipe me out for the rest of the day.

Congrats on the 50 novice. I forgot to mention the worms... Was too knackered to clean the bike today, must make sure I do it tomorrow before I go to Melbourne for a few days or the little suckers will be well and truly stuck on.

I achieved my first 50k non stop solo ride.

I had numb nuts, sore knees, a sore backside, and you couldn't wipe the smile off my face.
Okay now I have lost the smile :(
Developed two large saddle sores in the nether region that will keep me off the bike for a few days and I am NOT HAPPY JAN!
So I was probably correct in thinking the longer distance rides are not good for me, if it keeps me from my daily ride, because it is this consistant daily exercise that has contributed to my weight loss so far.

Well in Feb I got back on a bike after a 50 year break since my school days.

Started with 10k loops at around 18kph average and slowly built both speed and distance.
In April I managed my first 50k ride at 22kph.

Last week I celebrated a bike upgrade with a 75k ride at 21.6kph

Next target the Brisbane - Gold Coast (100k) in October

Toughen up sweetheart, I've been riding with a sebaceous cyst in those regions for weeks lol. Unfortunately I'm prone to them because of the amount of driving I do.

No such thing as sympathy here then? :(
I must look a little funny walking around like John Wayne?

Imagine walking around a building site looking like you've been interfered with lol. You can't imagine the pain and suffering I've learnt to suck up as I have THE least sympathetic wife to walk this earth.

I did 30km's this afternoon, which isn't my longest ride. But In Melbourne this afternoon it was blowing a gale. So by the time I arrived home I felt like I'd done
far more. My average speed was around 27km/h, which is up on my old average speed of about 24km/h. I was really happy considering the wind speed. :D

Not that i am that new having been back on the bike for 6 months - but in Feb i could not get up the local hill (Jells road, Waverley, Melb) which is up to a 20% gradient - not that long at around 300m but its a killer - 36YO, 60kg, heart rate hit 194 at about 10kph! - need to keep doing this then go for mount dandenong tourist road

I have THE least sympathetic wife to walk this earth.
They call it justice.
I am sure when you look at us from their perspective, it would be very humourous.

I would find a kinder hill. Don't get any pleasure from torture. I am happy to get my exercise on the friendly slopes until I get super fit.

Dandenong tourist road has many routes up 4 sides of the mounntain but the traditional route from the basin is about 13km to the top - . The vertical climb is around 450m . Have a look here - it doesnt look bad but the first 4km are an average of around 11-12% up to 20% in palces. Its a challenge that i have not finished yet but you can hit 80-90kph on the way down if your game enough - apparently its a catagory 2 climb ...

Well done guys....it is amazing how quickly you get some fitness back. The trick is to get out often - rather that do one big ride for the week (or thats what works for me). Each time I get out I try to up the effort.
