The same thing has happened to my Edge 800, along with a few other complaints (like the cadence not displaying on the unit every now and then). Same troubleshooting was done with the same results. After a few emails and phone calls to Garmin and after contacting Rob he was able to get a response from Garmin for me. They are now replacing the unit. Sending it off tomorrow.Aushiker wrote:Hi
My Garmin Edge 800 died yesterday, keeping up the Garmin tradition of durability. Was working fine on the ride to the start of the Audax ride. Stopped the timer, reset the ride data in preparation for the 200 and next thing I noticed that the Edge had shut down and was trying to re-boot. Would only get as far as the "loading map" screen. Rode the 200 sans technology. Was an interesting change
Managed to get it to do a factory reset after a few attempts. That made no difference. Removing the SD card made difference. Letting the battery go flat and then trying it connected to the computer made no difference.
Off it goes to Rob at Highly Tuned Athletes for Garmin to sort. Thankfully the warranty does not run out till early November.

You just reminded me my cadence doesn't display from time to time too.Fidi1979 wrote:The same thing has happened to my Edge 800, along with a few other complaints (like the cadence not displaying on the unit every now and then). And myself and another recent buyer I know get these wrong maximum cadence (like 180+) readouts for most rides.

why did you go away from the iPhone gadget?DaveOZ wrote:I must be lucky. Mine was worked flawlessly since I got it 4 months ago. Battery life is as advertised and I leave the backlight on all the time at about 70% so it is easy to see.

@winstonw... sensor delay is one of the reasons I ditched my BiPolar as I called it. It was only useful for telling you what you did 15 seconds ago. Seriously... I counted it. You'd be riding along... stop pedalling and it took that length of time to display that you'd stopped spinning. Useless. That was one of the things that forced the upgrade for me.

It did export well to Strava or any other useful logging program. The unit works fine and the display is great. I still have it and if they ever release a version of the App that will export files cleanly to Strava then I may revert back to it and sell the Garmin.Comedian wrote: why did you go away from the iPhone gadget?

I can accept cadence requiring a 3-4 second lag to get a smoother representation, but not 15 seconds. Suppose the longer sampling period reduces processing and updating output, and therefore battery drain. For current speed I'd expect instantaneous or no more than a 1 second lag.Comedian wrote:@winstonw... sensor delay is one of the reasons I ditched my BiPolar as I called it. The no cadence issue I occasionally get is no output at all from the start of a session, then it suddenly coming on 5+ minutes later, or not at all.
I am not having a general dump on Garmin (well, yeah I am ) but their website and Training Centre software are very basic in my view.
There's a lot of room to improve display of data when comparing two sessions on the same route.
For the prices they charge, I expected more stable hardware and advanced software. Maybe in 3-5 years they'll get there, or someone else will.
I am surprised Apple (or even...cringe...Microsoft) haven't leveraged their expertise to own this market.
One thing is for sure though. Polar dropped the ball. Be a long time before I ever touch another of their products. Sad really, because they had such a long lead on the competition for years.

Nah... seriously it was !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !!. It drives you nuts. Soon enough you realise for anything but constant state pedalling it makes the cadence readout useless. I find that most of the time you are accelerating or changing gears etc. It's great to have the readout in real - time.winstonw wrote: I can accept cadence requiring a 3-4 second lag to get a smoother representation, but not 15 seconds. One of the things I like most is the ability to upload a ridden course onto Garmin's Basecamp software, then overlay that ride onto Google Earth and then replay the ride as a tour from an aerial perspective that shows 3D ground relief and all the features along the way. It looks very much like the view from a helicopter following my ride coarse. This sort of stuff really "floats my boat". Anyone else discovered similar things of interest?

I know what you mean about the Garmin software, it seems to be loaded with glitches, for want of a more technical expression. My unit frequently freezes up and needs resetting and often just won't cooperate (for want of a more technical expression), but I still find its capabilities intriguing and amazing.

My strap played up. They sent it off (I kept the unit) for assessment. A couple of days later the LBS said they had a strap for me and just gave me a new one courtesy of Garmin.Marty Moose wrote:Well finally bit the bullet and bought a Polar Wearlink strap only for my 800. The Garmin strap is driving me nutz with its erratic readings. I asked my LBS about a replacement strap they said no probs its covered by wrty but will need to send the whole unit in just to get a new strap. Anyone else had this ??.

That is a known issue with the GSC-10. They fell over quite regularly on the 705's as well.winstonw wrote:well the cadence readout has finally died on the 800, despite rebooting several times, and cleaning the sensor.

Anyway it took a good 15mins to clean it and get rid the salt taste. Guess what this morning !!!! Perfect readings, make sure you clean the strap REALLY well with detergent and fairly warm water will keep posting results. I think the salt really builds up on the pick up causing the problem, my heart rate has been erratic for weeks before and yes I put in a new battery.

Interesting result. I have put mine through the front loader in the past. Didn't make much difference longer term but maybe it is due for a wash again. Can't loose anything as it is hopeless at present anyway.Marty Moose wrote:Anyway it took a good 15mins to clean it and get rid the salt taste. Guess what this morning !!!! There will be nothing wrong with the 4 sensors you have, as it is most likely that the Edge 800 is set to getting your speed from the GPS and cadence from your cadence sensor. If you change this to the setting that obtains speed and cadence from the speed/cad sensor then all 4 of your GSC10's will work whether you have GPS or not.Strawburger wrote:I've got 4 GSC-10 sensors on various bikes and none read the speed when in a low gps area, however all still read cadence without fail. It seems a bit hit and miss with the GSC-10 as far as quality goes...
There are hundreds of thousands of GSC10's out there and the failure rate is a miniscule percentage. For a customer to own multiple sensors and 100% of them being faulty is not "hit and miss", it is user application issues.

Yeh I read your issues with this Aus, at the time mine was ok. I've done two rides now after cleaning like this and its still fine. I also received my polar wearlink strap and its also works fine. I think the polar strap is better than the garmin one. The wearlink straps are on Ebay in Australia for $39 free delivery well worth it. If you like I can send you the link the shop was really good express postageAushiker wrote:Interesting result. I have put mine through the front loader in the past. Thanks Rob. I thought it was user error but i have played with the settings without much luck on the 305 & 800. My last thought is replacing the batteries and syncing after trawling the internet for other solutions which didn't work.RobGrinter wrote:There will be nothing wrong with the 4 sensors you have, as it is most likely that the Edge 800 is set to getting your speed from the GPS and cadence from your cadence sensor. I believe you can check to see if the sensor is working by passing the cadence/speed magnets past the sensors. The light on the sensor should turn red for cadence and green for speed. I only get the red light popping up no matter what settings i set. Fingers crossed fresh batteries will fix it.
