Seems like the Garmin ownership experience has improved little since my pathetic experience with the Edge 305. I swore never to buy another Garrmin product, and it looks like that was a wise decision.

My experience with them has been fine up to this point.
Seems like the 800 is having the most problems though. For any prospective buyers of the 800 it might be wise to wait until they iron out some of the issues, or purchase the 500 instead.
imho.

I was talking to the owner of a LBS and he said a guy had brand new Garmin was coming up with memory full.. Sent it back to Garmin and apparently the guy copied Norton Antivirus program onto it. Hahahaha end users

My Edge 800 is no longer able to connect to my PC. Doesn't enter USB mode and isn't charging, though it worked fine the last time I used it last week. Otherwise it's still working fine. Any ideas?

cheers

Could be a short, take a look at the cable ends and port on the garmin for physical bends

Then try a different port / cable after blow drying the garmin mini usb port

If that fails, see if you can flash it / hard reset / send it for repair / warranty

Oh yeah, have you tried turning the computer off then on again

Yes, have tried all of the above. I even gave it a firm talking to... Looks like its the dreaded "fault"

Update - Appears I wasn't hard resetting it correctly, it appears to be all OK now :)

Hey Grant, have you tried a different Garmin with your computer/cable or a known working computer/cable combination (from someone else with a Garmin) with your Garmin? I've had a couple of issues in the past with getting my Garmin (Edge 500) to connect to the computer. The first was a cable problem. In that case I was using a cable I'd got with a mobile phone and it wouldn't work with the Garmin. Since then I've tried several cables I have and some work and others don't, the unit seams very specific with what cables will work for it so if it is a cable problem swapping in another cable from your collection may not work, you really need one that you know is working with a Garmin.

The second time I had issues it turned out to be the front usb connectors on the computer had both stopped working (I'm guessing it's a chip on the motherboard that has gone) so I now have it running to the rear ones and all is fine again.

If you want I'm sure we could sort something out to test my working cable/edge combination out with your computer or your edge with my computer/cable?

Thanks Shane,

I was just updating my last post as you were posting, appears to have been a software corruption problem and I was pressing on the wrong part of the screen when attempting the reset. The lady at garmin support was very helpful and not the least bit sarcastic.

I am wondering if I should delete some of the activities off the 800 given what Mr Comedian said.

Can't hurt, if nothing else I've noticed that when there's less activities on the device the uploading is quicker.

I've had the 800 since launch. Not 1 issue.

There is an option to delete anything older than one month on the device. I'll be using that by default henceforth.

though when i got on to Strava which was a good year or more after getting my 705, i was most impressed that it downloaded every single ride i'd ever done with the Garmin, if one uses this default, maybe that would close off that option. don't know, just a thought

Can somebody please remind about whether the Garmin 800 automatically detects which bike you're riding? The better half's Garmin 800 is currently not doing so. She's been on a ride and the data has been recorded for the wrong bike. Thanks for any help.

Nope... if you have sensors on the bike and you've got blanks then that's a good indication that you haven't switched bikes!

I haven't heard of such a feature (which is not to say it doesn't exist). I make a point of selecting the right bike before I head off.

Does the 800 have a per bike odometer or can you sort in garmin connect to figure out how many km's per bike you've done?

The odometer is per bike. You can set up to three bike profiles.
