Hi Rob

On the subject of the topo maps. I assume these are on a SD card. Can they therefore be read or transferred to a computer?

No they cannot.

The only good thing about the SD version is that they can be used in any device. Other than that they suck.

I am not sure what the rule will be at this point.

With the Edge 705, (or any other Garmin product that accepted SD card), you could buy it 2 ways. On SD card which meant you could move it from unit to unit and then the 2nd method was on CD/DVD and you had to assign it to one and only one unit by its serial number, but could be loaded on to many computers. (You had to revoke it on a serial numbered unit before it could be moved to another unit).

With the Edge 800 coming with TOPO installed free of charge, it begs the question as to what format it is in. I would take an educated guess that it may be specific to Edge 800 only and not transferrable in any way or to any other device, therefore not of either the 2 above methods. (Its only a guess, and will be gladely proven incorrect if someone wants to advise otherwise.)

Whilst it may not fully answer your question, i hope this helps.

With regards to temperature on this, can anyone comment?

I have an Edge 705 which does not record or show temperature (even if it has sensor). Recently, I spoke to someone who has the Edge 500 and he says the temperature siplay on his unit is useless - in that it takes 20 minute for the temp to be updated (think inside warm house onto a winter ride). Would anyone know how the Edgo 800 would compare?

The 705's from the UK this year had full Europe maps include 'free of charge' on an SD card that works in any garmin unit. I think that aus topo maps will be the same. Only time will tell.

Yes the SD would work in any unit, however, Garmin have told me that the TOPO maps on the Edge 800 will be pre-loaded in the memory and not on a SD card.

Other than that, time will tell. It's only about 4 weeks till it arrives, so we will all know soon. It is still on schedule for 2nd week of November. get your orders in, as we expect to be sold out before they arrive.

UPDATE:

The Edge 800 bundle will come with the TOPO maps on SD Card. Additionally, this will likely be able to be loaded up to one computer for route planning.

The non-bundle at $499 will NOT have TOPO maps at all. You would need to buy this at extra cost as an accessory.

Therefore the bundle is by far the best buy at $649. comes with Speed/Cadence, new version 2 premium heart rate strap and TOPO maps on SD card. At $150 above the non-bundle, there is nearly $400 worth of value.

Again, get in ASAP with your Pre-Order, as we do expect to have sold out soon and definetely prior to actual release date (2nd week Nov)

I'll wait for the 800 performance bundle minus maps that is listed at other online shops, and then use the free maps that are available. Even better value :D

IMO, with GPS chips in Android, iPhones, ?Windows/Palm/Nokia phones, the days of single function devices could be numbered.

Car-based GPSes have dropped a lot in price in the last 5 years, and Garmin/Tom Tom may still earn $ from selling maps to these devices and 3rd party phones. But I can’t justify paying to keep maps updated on a bicycle GPS. And for devices that don’t have maps (e.g. Edge 500), could their entire function be replicated in a phone device with a GPS chip, colour screen and nifty software?
My iPhone is always in my back pocket (in a zip lock bag for sweat and rain reasons) with my Garmin 500 doing the work. The GPS is much more accurate and my phone still has some battery life left when I get to where I'm going. iPhone's are heavily locked and I doubt will ever offer the data logging of GPS, HR & Cadence (let alone a power meter). They also won't offer 18hrs battery, rain resistant and small enough to fit on my stem and still allow the AYUPs room.

All in one devices like the iPhone are great for many things, but specialist devices are usually BETTER.

Commute: Giant TCR Alliance 1 - Carbon / Alloy Frame, full Ultegra G/set, Dura-ace 24mm CL rims, AYUP lights

Damnit!
Got home tonight to find once I uploaded my data to Training Centre that my 705 wouldn't turn on anymore, it's stuck on the splash loading screen. Tried hard/soft resets and even got an update from support to no avail. Looks like I have 2 options, send it off to support & pay for it to get repaired and I'm dubious about the power connectors on this product. Or lash out and get the Garmin Edge 800. Looks like my iphone will get a workout now and that won't last me sundays ride either.

Decision decision. Have no bike computer for a few weeks whilst I wait for the 800 to come out, or get my 705 repaired....

Edit

After being on the phone I managed to repair my unit. Lost all my history and my profile is a bit out but all is good. The filesystem had become majorly corrupted on the unit. Will test it out driving to work today to ensure it's operating 100%

If it was a chkdsk on the flash memory that fixed it, that happened to me at least twice, before the 705 took its walk from the handlebars. Both times, it was after a couple of months history had built up (it was nowhere near full). I suspected that some of the flash memory was dud, and decided to minimize the amount of history left on the Garmin so that it wouldn't tax the faulty memory area.

You might be better waiting for a Garmin competitor to make a more reliable product. Wonder if this Bryton rider model is any good ?

Hi

Looking at the Bryton Sports website it seems it is there only product so no history there. The lack of details (e.g., manuals, screen shots, details of the features etc) bothers me. Also I cannot find any reviews of substance online. All that would put me off spending $549 to be a first trier. Off course if you want to have a go :)

Edit: A bit more at the MTB forums.

Would put me off too - once bitten (by Garmin), twice shy (of everything with big $ tag). Would need a couple of solid recommendations to sway me first, and it would be nice to have a more solid brand behind it ...

Hmm, the lack of format compatibility is a serious drawback - kludgey work-arounds aren't really acceptable at that price point. Even a PIA for $100 loggers.

I've found TomTom car navigations GPS's a cut above the rest (I've tried Navman and Garmin units in the family) - very easy to use software interface, and reliable operation. Just wish they'd get cracking on a sports/fitness model with long battery life. Don't they realise how many of us cashed up baby boomers are out there ready to spend $$$ on them ?

If anyone wants to do a review of the Bryton Rider, we have one available waiting to be sent off to a willing candidate. Couple of conditions will apply (ie must link to HTA as stockist and provide CC details in case the brand new unit is not returned).

Reviewer will have the option to buy at significant reduction. (approx 30% off).

i was keen on the garmin 800, but i think i will give it a miss for awhile given my experience with garmin and their product development of the edge 500

every firmware update for the 500 so far has just introduced more problems, with v2.40 now screwing up elevation radings by 50+meters... no fix or update for which u would think is an easy to fix problem seen as yet.... and very little input or acknowledgement by garmin on their support forums....might stick with the devil i know....

Agghh, decided to preorder with your guys and now the work firewall isn't playing nice with your site. It'll have to wait until I get home. :(

Played with an 800 today at the noosa tri. The maps are much faster than the 705 when touch scrolling. Looks like a nice unit.

Trying the 705. Pleased. But the bike mount is so-so. And if mobile phones had as weak a software as the 705, well, there would not be many mobile phones.
