Techmoan has a review of another "GoPro" look-a-like camera, the DXG DVS-5K8.

Maybe this should go into Moron Motorists or Post Utube Videos.
But its more about the quality of night footage from a Mobius, front and rear. Screen capture off VLC edited in MMM. No changes to brightness or contrast except for the srceen capture.

I think that's pretty damn good actually.

I'll say. The one Pushy has seems to do a lot better at night than mine does.

My settings are "Wide dynamic range " on and "Video data rate" standard. IMO the placement of the camera on top of the helmet is also a determining factor as light reflected from plates does not seem to get quite as washed out. Luck can also play a big part. Only about 5 or 6 frames had legible plate image in the time before he got out of range.

Hero 3+ update Re: Video Camera who uses one?

Postby eldavo » Fri Oct 04, 2013 10:44 am

It looks like marketing is addressing the pre-production GoPro Hero 3 Black issues amongst the update selling points in the 3+ released now.

The iOn Air Pro 2 action camera gets a look at at MTBR.

We look forward to getting a test sample of the iON Air Pro 2 for evaluation and getting a closer look at image quality. The styling is very reminiscent of one of our favorite POV cameras, the Contour (R.I.P.) and the additional features (waterproof, wi-fi, vibration) added with the competitive price make the iON a solid option in the POV/Action Video Camera game.

Whatcha guys reckon ...

The SJ1000 or wait for the Garmin Virb ? I want something primarily for cycling safety and race footage... The Mobius looks good but its not waterproof. Want something that is going to be fairly durable.

Cheers

I'm waiting for some more reviews and user views of the Virb before making a camera purchase. Probably have to wait a few more weeks though.

I'm after something to use primarily as accident recording/bad behaivour documentation rather than to give replays of my wonderful commutes.

What is the minimum standard I should look for to try and make sure that number plates are legible etc?

One concern for me would be battery life, depending on how far you ride, will you need extra batteries how do you swap them over (is it a PITA?) and how much do they cost?

I don't really need a high $$$ camera so I have a 720p Jumbo camera in a tic-tac box with perspex lens. It has an external battery as well so lasts for a few hours. It doesn't look like the most awesome camera, but for $80 or whatever I paid for it, it was a good deal for a commuter.

You can see some of the footage with slow-motion bit in so you can see number plates here. Remember youtube compression kills a little bit of the quality and note that you can't make out the number plate of the guy trying to power slide (even in the original footage), but you can see most number plates. This camera does produce lower quality in low light conditions (see here), I'm not sure if the GoPro / Contour cameras improve much in these situations though.

Almost the same question as above. I dont want a camera for heroics.^^^^^^
Need a camera that does the following:
Battery life to suit - average ride is 1.5hrs 90% 3x per week(bunch)to 4hrs (1x per week, always when stuff happens as i'm solo or with mrs waka)
Would like water resistant, or ability to make it so.
Recording Quality of the mobius action cam is good enough for me.
Helmet mount.
Champagne taste but have a beer budget
Input welcomed...... Thank you.

Maybe some good news on the Contour front with a possible revival on the books. Details at http://www.geekwire.com/2013/investor-p ... 9-million/

Personally I would go the mobius with a external battery. I used to ride with the #16 I think it was setup like this on my helmet. Worked a treat.

I was thinking the same.... Just wanted confirmation :)
http://goo.gl/UetF7M 32gb from ebay US$92.99 and helmet http://goo.gl/bX8606 US$6.59
Any tips on waterproofing this thing ? And is 32gb too big, would a 16gb suffice for reasonable recording rate for 4hrs?
and something like this for external power? US$http://goo.gl/pnPVus
Lots of questions but this all comes off the wheel budget!

The opening post should provide a link to one option that might work for waterproofing it. It is the mint tin suggestion. I used a 32 gb and that was heaps for four hours. My battery was on the supplier sold at the time but hte ones you linked to should be fine as well.

Had some fun today with my GoPro Hero, GoPro Hero 2 and Drift HD Ghost. Was interesting once it was all synced up and running with the data overlay.

I used Dashware for the overlay. Made and synced the video/s up in Premiere Pro and then made a custom overlay in Dashware (so the overlay can have a lot more or a lot less) using my .fit file from the Garmin (can also use GPX etc if Strava is used to record runs). I got it when they had a special going and when the dollar was high. A pretty good program for 30 bucks at the time.

I've found the quality of the mobius to be great and more than adequate at night with good street lighting. As expected though it's no good on unlit streets. The battery is long enough for my 60min commute and loop recording on a 32GB sd card is going well. On max settings I'm getting a file size about 600MB per 5min file.

I tried the helmet mount but gave that away for just cable ties to the helmet as per another photo in this thread. Still trying to work out the best way to dampen vibrations though. Happy to post samples or raw files if needed.

A water resistant mobius case is available but a bit pricey for me at $22. I think I'll wait for it to drop in price or copies to spring up elsewhere. Also don't know how it handles the heat generated.
