I have plenty of free time (semi retired), an understanding wife and a love of getting out on the bike and enjoying the company, scenery, fresh air and the breeze rushing bye

Excellent. I was wondering where you got the time to do so many kms. Good on you and god bless your good wife. :)

I love the maps by the way. There are a few posts asking for good rides and a map with a little description says it all.

thanks breezer1

glad your able to get back on the bike soon

the map just shows the area, but if you google one of the suburbs showing you can then see the whole area in detail, it is nearly all on or near the ocean or lake, a really nice scenic ride!

Finally got my new first bike build up and running this week, it's been about a two year project and is on borrowed wheels for now but it's nice to finally be able to take it out for a ride. Only been to work and back a couple of times so far, including it's first ride in the wet on the way home yesterday. Don't plan on making wet commutes a regular feature for it though, the guards on the old bike make it a better choice for that. Busy weekend this weekend but hoping to at least find time to take it out for a more testing ride, one of the local climbs would be nice. I've posted a pic in the gallery so I figure I'll put a thumbnail in this thread, click on it and it'll take you to the gallery pic.

I also see my friendly challenger from last year, Barto is back on my tail. Good to see you there again Barto, you've been a bit quiet in the thread lately but making progress up the leaderboard.

Yes , we have noticed. But if you want to be in the big attack on breezer1 in June, you will need to keep well ahead of the red arrow in the lead-up.

Yes, Apple, we've been hearing rain, camping trips, canoeing on lakes and estuaries. I thought we agreed that we had 2 enemies in life that needed to be defeated. The red arrow and whoever is in the lead (breezer1- although he is probably a nice bloke). Everything else will fall into place after that.

Now, let's think rain. A coat, 20kms reasonable? Just to keep the othes honest.

Transported a bike and the trainer to the shed today and set it up. (Wife went out.) But don't ask me how i will ever reach that right lever let alone change gear. I knew I needed a fixie for some reason.

Working on it...got a couple of days off during this week...then 11 days annual leave for Easter, so lots of riding opportunities coming my way!

Gonna be out of the shadow of the red arrow soon enough :)

The curse of the red triangle. No ride today because of a bad back. I hope to do a 20km flat social ride tomorrow. Need it right by next weekend and Grand Slam Willunga ride of 100kms.

Swapped the rear cassette today. Oh the fun.

All the gurus said it was relatively easy, and after watching some online videos, I agreed.

Got my Park lockring remover and chain whip out, and off I went. Well, the lockring remover wouldnt slide into the lockring on the cassette. I tried different angles, I put some chain oil on it hoping it would slide on easier. Nothing. I watched another video, I tried again. It wouldn't go in. I had a good look at the rear cassette. This is what I saw.

Image

No wonder. It was off centre. Ah, this was when the fun started. I thought I would loosen the axle nuts off a bit. Undid them a turn, and it was the same, still off centre. Another turn, still out of whack. Ah bugger it, away I went with the shifter. Next thing I know the axle dropped out and I heard this ting ting ting noise. What the hell. I looked down to see ball bearings rolling around in the sawdust on the garage floor. Ok, so my rear hubs aren't sealed bearings. Good to know.

It has been a few hours of swearing and carrying on, and with out cone spanners I am slightly stuffed, as it looks like I might have wound the cones too far in on one side when I did it all back up and I can't undo them with out a cone spanner. :(

The new cassette is on, now, but when the wheel is on, the disc brake rubs against the pad on one side. Feck it! Ah well, lesson learnt. Off to the LBS on Monday.

As you can see in the photo above, that is when the new cassette is on, and unless you hold it when tightening, it goes out of whack. I suspect a slightly bent axle. I don't know enough to be sure, but the LBS will be able to help I hope.

It is persisting down here, so I am not missing out. :D

Was going to ride today but after a full day of pushing my way through dense and some what prickly bush  yesterday for work, I took the easy option of a sleep inn, breakfast with the family under the patio and a spot of gardening 8)

looks to me like a bent axle. All you need is a new axle from the LBS and it should all go back together OK. It is a simple enough job. I think you would be better spending your money on a cone spanner than paying the LBS to do it for you.

All you need to do is make sure there is a few mm of axle on either side of the cone lock nuts to fit in the drop outs. Take your old axle into the LBS to make sure you get the right length.

Wow, less that 100 behind the dreaded triangle. Mind you, looks like rain this week so it may not last. If I can ride 4 days I'm ahead for the week though. That triangle is a tough master.

Thanks Barto. Yeah I'm still doing the Audax rides so keep expecting a jump at some point in the month followed by a slide back down the leaderboard until the next one.

Norbs, did you end up with the whole axle out during the process? Should be able to tell with it out if it's bent or not. Might not be a lot of fun when what starts off as a simple jobs turns out not to be so but at least you got to learn a bit more about your bike in the process. I reckon getting the cone wrench and having a go at fixing yourself would definitely be the go, that way you'll also have the cone wrench for future work on the bike, like servicing or adjusting the bearings as they wear. Just out of curiosity, how did you tighten the lock nut without tightening the cone at the same time without one?

I did, but I couldn't get the cluster side cone and nut off. I think I may have tightened the luck nut onto the cone and now can't unlock them. I honestly dont know, but the cluster side cone and lock nut are jammed together. I think that may be where the bend in the axle is. I put the lock nut into the vice and nipped it up just so it would hold. I then used multigrips on the non threaded part of the axle to try and move it to no avail.

I will take it to the LBS on Monday to get their thoughts. I have ordered a small maintenance kit form Torpedo 7. I have a few of the bits in there already, but I figure for $39, it is a good enough deal for me. I am sure Cell will be doing them for $6.50 come Monday morning. :)
