I just wanna say thanks riding!

Postby Comedian » Tue Apr 05, 2011 5:00 pm

I've mentioned it elsewhere but I thought I'd create a new thread for fun. Yesterday marked one year of riding for me. The fourth of April was my very first commute. :)

In that time I have...

- Gotten really quite fit.
- Travelled 8100k by push bike.
- Lost about 26kg of flab.
- Become comfortable being in public wearing skin tight clothing.
- Ridden 170k in one ride.
- Met lots of super nice people.
- Found lots of people that are really very inspirational.
- Kept up with groups riding at 35kph av for 40k.
- Participated in 3 mass participation rides (despite loosing lots of mass myself).
- Bought two pushbikes for myself.
- Become a bit of a fitness role model amongst friends and relatives (Really!).
- Been called the "bike geek", "bike nutcase", "the terminator", "Banana man" ,"Toyboy", "the Beast"
- Bought a ridiculous amount of biking paraphernalia from various online shops.
- Crashed while towing the kids in a trailer ("Daddy can we walk to school?").
- Sprinted at 52kph on the flat (wohoo!).
- Been added to the business plan by name at the LBS.
- Travelled at 78.7kph on a pushbike dressed in lycra (what could possibly go wrong).
- Slashed 2 tyres, had about 10 flats, and somehow have amassed 5 sets of tyres in the garage plus the two that are on the bikes.
- Saved a whole heap of money in bus fares.
- "Reinvested" about 10 times that in the pushbike industry.
- Made my wife really quite proud of me.
- Shown the kids that going somewhere does not necessarily involve a car.
- Scared 7 shades of shite out of several people with my air horn.
- Spent way too much time on the internets talking about bike stuff.
- Persuaded about 4 people to ride to work on a semi regular basis (probably to shut me up!)
- Been checked out by the opposite sex on occasion (for the first time in my life).
- Saved lots of time by riding to work over the bus.
- Have not gone postal at any fellow commuter or a Brisbane City Council bus driver.
- Ridden in torrential rain.
- Ridden up Mt Cootha.
- Swapped my car cleaning time for bike cleaning time.
- Done good things for the environment by not driving places.
- Joined two bike advocacy groups!
- Remembered what hunger feels like.
- Seen my love of cars dwindle to a lifetime low.

That's all I can think of for the moment... maybe other people have similar lists. ;)

That's one hell of a list.

Well Done!!! I'll be happy with half that list at my 12 month mark.

Congratulations Steve, well done on your achievement!

ANZAC Day will mark one year since I went on my first ride, a short river loop in which I nearly killed myself trying to get up Highgate Hill from the uni bridge end, on a MTB

I have done 3 mass participation rides, just completed my maiden century, traded the MTB for a roadie and have up-graditis already!

I have set my sights on conquering Mt Coot-tha for this 2nd year!

Nice! I still need to get my bike serviced + think more about getting a new bike :( Used to be in a rhythm, now currently out of it just because my wheel isn't aligned properly + other minor issues & getting more annoyed with the additional weight I have to carry (bag rack)

Comedian,

A really inspirational list. Haven't ever done a list myself but lots of your points remind me how worthwhile riding can be. Nothing there about any serios body damage. Keep safe.

Great list, how many would you have thought possible on that first ride?

Maybe we should all take the time to reflect on what we have achieved on two wheels...
Some people are like Slinkies, they're really good for nothing..

..But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs!

I was hoping I wouldn't be alone with the lists :) I know there are many similar stories to my own out there. :)

What would I have thought I would have achieved?? I'm not to sure. One thing I do remember was that I was petrified I wouldn't keep it up.

Now I know it just has to be part of my life for the rest of my life. :)

This month is my anniversary as well. Some of the guys i ride with already know my story, suffice to say, prior to last year i had many rough years in the leadup including stress related career issues and a battle with alcohol .After a trip to Thailand with the family last April 2010,something happened.I had a heap of duty free smokes, and once they were gone i told myself "that was it".I started cutting down and then one day the Mrs and I went out and ripped all the smokes up and threw them in the bin. Have not had a smoke since.Have not had a drink for 6 years.

On the 25 April 2010 I joined the local gym.Started swimming and walking and cross training.
Then started power walking.
Then running and set my sites on the city to surf.
Bought a drop bar bike in June, and added some riding to the mix.
Did the city to surf in August,(14 K run) then from that point it has been all about riding many times per week.(Generally 6 Days with 1 Day off)
Bought a second flat bar bike, for errands and wet days/bike paths etc.

Since August I have ridden 10800 Kilometres.
Since January 1 2011 i have ridden 3,800 Kilometres

I have joined a bunch ride each Saturday morning when i can(Wife's shifts permitting)

Many personal goals have been achieved in the past year(City to surf, several century rides, ride up Bowen Mountain)
The family and I now live much healthier lifestyles and My wife now rides a drop bar 3 times per week for 40 k rides.

Weight loss>
30+ Kilogrammes since April 2010

Just to prove IT CAN BE DONE, i have attached some before and after photographs.

Before 2005 still on the grog.
Image

Before 2009 Cousins property Off the Grog but a big unit.
Image

After April 1 2011 Parramatta Park.

Nearly 48,retired and bloody happy.

Tim

Edit: Back to Thailand in 9 Days!!!! Can't wait.
