For how long?

I'd leave a $1000 bike for no more than half an hour - long enough for someone to see it, go and get their cutters and come back for it.

Maybe longer in some places.

My current bike is in the $500-600 range and I am pretty paranoid generally. I don't commute so only have it out of sight (and chained up - with lights, pump, computer, etc removed) if I'm having a toilet break during a solo ride. As time goes on and it's not a shiny new bike anymore I'll probably care less ;-).

Well, my current bike would cost a good deal more to replace than I would really be able to afford to spend, and, to tell the truth, I would not leave it locked up out of my sight for more than a few minutes normally. That said I leave it locked up in the "Bike Room" of my Office block when I use it as my daily commuter. You need a correctly encoded Mill Key to enter the room and it has bike racks which you can lock your bike to (and I do), but nevertheless, it is not really that sucure as pretty much anybody in the building can get their key encoded to get access. This is one of the reasons I am planning a retro rebuild to act as my main commuting bike.

This is not a concern for me as I put mine in my warehouse on days I commute and we have a huge staff of 4. Having said that I would not leave anything above $800 locked up all day where the public can get at it without investigating bike insurance.

It is also so broad a question...

Where will it be left (busy, quiet, dangerous area, suburbia)

What time (peak, midnight, early morning)

How long (minutes, hours, days).

It all makes the difference.

The only bike I've ever locked up is my old Apollo Mountain bike. Nobody would want to steel that beast, and I guess that'd be worth about $50 these days if I'm lucky. :D
My other bike no way.

I only have one bike that I'd leave locked up out of my sight for longer than 10 minutes (eg to duck into a shop). It cost me $600 over 10y ago.

I used to commute on my good bikes but they were locked up inside a secure bike cage in the basement of a staff-access only building.

Inside, in sight. Lucky me.

If the risk was there, I'd be looking for a hack.

My bike was $2k rrp and I'll leave it locked up for 10-20mins tops if its out of sight and thats on a rare occasion with two heavy duty locks, or on my commute to work it is taken into the office and locked up to the stairwell in the next room even though there are three key locked doors and two flights of stairs to get there.

Everyone in town knows my recumbent and I don't think a robber whould get to far on it before half the town jumped on him.

But when I go off to the Big Smoke [Sydney] to visit my girls I only take my $50 Ebay folder and even locking it and going for a coffee worries me... sure it didn't cost much but who wants to walk home?

I leave my pionear(RRP $750) alone for hours on end. While I do not like the thought of losing it it comes down to a simple fact. I got it to save on transport costs and it has already paid it's way. If i did not ride, lock and go and do what I need to do, it would be sitting in the house doing nothing. Now what is the point of that I want a work horse not a show pony.

Idea - How hard would it be to invent a device that sends an sms message as soon as someone tries to tamper with it - eg cut the chain etc?

We have the technology now - and the demand is there - cripes I'd fork out $200 or so for something that did that...

On second thoughts - that would be closing the gate after the horse has bolted...I can see the sms message now: "say bye bye bike..."

ok - found this:

It'll cost around the same as a cheap mobile phone, as a minimum. In any case, the bike would be gone by the time you got the message.

My MTBs sitting out the front of my work at the moment locked to the roof rack of my car... The Thule racks are neat in their lockability but the locks aren't very strong, as you'd only have to cut the plastic QR lever to get the bike!

I've got an ancient roadie I found on a council clean up, it currently owes me a total $5, that was some bearings to fix the bottom bracket, once I put on the set of lights I've got for it the total will be $15.

I don't bother locking it up as I'd be afraid someone would come and damage the lock, thats worth something.

My main bike currently owes me about $2000, I don't leave that anywhere out of my sight.

I ride my bike to the shops and to the video store.

There is nothing to lock it up to at the video store so i get very worried. People think me wierd walking halfway down the aisle then jumping the 1.5m video rack and knocking people over to check on the trusty stead.

But...i guess different place, different people.

Why am I reminded of all the times I've seen ratty Triumph and Harly motorbikes left outside a pub with a cattle dog chained to the front wheel

My current bike cost just over 2k, not the most expensive by a long chalk but expensive to me, so there's absolutely no chance I would be leaving it anywhere I'm not. Coffs Harbour does have some bicycle cages, which I haven't seen as yet but as I don't use the bike to commute it doesn't apply to me.
Just as a general rule I wouldn't be leaving the bike out of my sight irregardless.
Steve.
