2012 Black Cat Awards

1. Only people who have registered a puncture or interest in the competition prior to July 01 2012 will be counted. This is in case this competition gets sponsored again - I don't want people suddenly popping up and saying on Nov 1. "I've had 37 punctures this year".
2. Every puncture must be listed individually or with some substantiation - "Five punctures on my 16km ride today, three from thorns and two from glass" is barely acceptable, but "I had five punctures last week" won't be counted.
3. You can only claim one puncture if you have not ridden the bike before discovering the next puncture. That is, breaking the valve stem off whilst pumping doesn't mean two flats. However, a double flat (both front and rear tyres at the same time) can be counted as two.
4. It has to be a flat to your bike, fixing someone else's flat doesn't count, and it must be on a bike. No car, pram, soccer ball, or blow-up doll flats please.
5. Flat must have occurred between January 1st 2012 and December 31st 2012 inclusive.
6. To have punctures listed in this competition, your must be a forum member or an immediate family member who has been the subject of amusing/scary/blonde moment stories on this forum. Or have slipped me a $50.
7. No post whoring, let's try and keep chatter to a minimum.
8. Dumb newbie questions re. punctures and prevention should be directed to The Shed. But I'll give you a freebie for how to avoid punctures - if you don't ride your bike, you don't get punctures.
9. When you post your puncture, include a little story, but I want your running total listed - otherwise I make mistakes. Maths isn't my strong point.
10. All other contentious points that aren't addressed by these rules will be decided by me. If you don't like my ruling, read the last sentence of Rule #4 and ask me again. :D

I will try and update the running total when I get a puncture myself. Based on past history, this will be every couple of weeks.

Let me start then

Riding to work, had travelled 35k's and then at one of the busiest parts of the ride I hear psssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Nothing in tyre except tiny cut.

Total = 1

PS: Went and grabbed bike to ride this morning and saw tyre was flat. This after patching the tyre the previous night. Maybe I should have ridden it a metre to get this one claimed as well :mrgreen:

76km ride yesterday, picked up a puncture, possibly from a pothole, the hole was at the base of the stem.

What a way to start the year :cry:

total = 1

I'll join in the fun, but hopefully it will be schadenfreude and not first-hand fun :D

I suffered a flat on new years night as I was laying down to go to sleep heard a loud hiss sound, said to the missus what was that? Hoped up, search all the rooms, discovered that I had a flat tyre. TOTAL-1

Good to see Rule #7 has been ignored already :D

First ride of the year on Monday. After turning up ten minutes late to the SPR Public Holiday ride - silly me thought I could catch the bunch.... Pride wouldn't let me take shortcuts. After chasing un-assisted, almost 47km later.... finally caught the main group for the wind up to the end of ride sprint. Had a dig but was swamped before the line.

Oh yeah - was completely knackered and not paying attention after I sat up and barrelled into/over a gutter drain. <idiot> Pinch flat. </idiot> And suprised not to have dinged the rim and punctured the rear as well...
Only one klick from the coffee shop and took just long enough to fix it so the queue had dissipated....

Total = 1

Given the presence of n+1 bikes and trike in our household, count me in. 1 puncture on the commuter bike last year. Let's keep it that way. :P conversely is there a white cat award for no punctures?!!

Early start for me also this year.

+1

Second ride for the year, and on my commute this morning I hit something solid and the front went flat almost immediately.
Will check for the reason when I get home.

Total = 1
Av km per flat = 121km

Kev.

Might as well sign up. Off the mark this morning, 5 mins in on my commute to work with the rear a little under inflated hit a sharp little bump in the road and pinched the tube. 5 days after losing my CO2 inflator and chancing my luck resulted in a 20 minute walk home and a 90 minute extended first day back at work for 2012. Felt a bit foolish for bypassing the LBS for cyclingexpress and not having a mini pump :oops:

so far only 1.. but it had 4 holes in it????
2 of which were the initial puncture/s I guess, as the other 2 looked like a snake bite puncture (from when the flat tyre hit a (slight) pothole at 32km/hr..)

rims = ok. :o

Got my number one for the year :evil:

Worst thing is swapped the tubes over and the new tube for some reason won't inflate over 80 PSI and makes some weird noises :shock: Looks like it is seated properly as well.

I hate punctures :x

and now for something truly wierd...

I haven't had any flats for quite a few months (i know, surprising considering the lack of attention from the council to state of local roads-but perhaps the subject of another thread)

I first came across this thread over breakfast yesterday
[slowly fade in X-files music]

then pulled out the trusty steed for my commute - only to discover the black cat had visited overnight. :shock: Not even a hint of a problem the previous day... what sort of evil powers do you guys possess??? :)

not sure about the rules, as I wasn't on the bike at the time, does that one count?

Hit a crack on a corner and flat spotted. My first ride of the year after returning from Injury.

Total for 2012 = 1

I'm sure my lead over Twizzle won't last long

Set a new record today with three punctures on the one ride.

Total for 2012 = 3

First was a cut to the rear tyre (Michelin Krylion).
2nd was what I thought was another cut to the same tyre. Had to perform an 'in field' roadside puncture repair for the first time, as opposed to simply swapping a tube.
After I punctured again a few km's later I got suspicious. It turned out the culprit was my newly fitted Zefal cloth rim tape wasn't quite wide enough, which had exposed a fraction of the spoke hole. So I had two internal punctures at the same point in the tube. Luckily I had the remainder of the cloth tape in my bag so I could use it to patch over the offending spoke hole in question.

I also broke a tube on New Year's Day by pushing the valve too much whilst pumping the tyre up before the ride...but they don't count.

I will try and update the running total when I get a puncture myself. Based on past history, this will be every couple of weeks.

Based on this year, the roads you ride on and the general bad luck that I bring you shouldn't really be every couple of days :lol:

Well ... I'm now on the board with my first puncture.

Rode into work this morning, parked the bike and everything seemed fine. It wasn't until I was just about to hop on the bike to go home that I realised the rear tyre was completely flat.

Gave the wheel a quick spin and found a bloody staple (of all things) stuck in the tyre. How that managed to get in there I have absolutely no idea ...

Well, looks like some people have had a fast start to the year... and it wasn't me!

Confession time : I have been talked into trying tubeless again, so hopefully I won't be a regular contributor to this thread this year. Also - my previously preferred type, the Panaracer Duro seems to have a small problem, in that the rubber in the centre of the tread starts coming away from carcass when it gets thin. If you don't mind binning them when this occurs, they are still a good tyre (in terms of puncture protection), but it could lead to safety issues. I'd lost chunks of rubber from the rear on two tyres, but then the front started making noise and when I pulled it off to investigate found 'bubbles' everywhere around the tyre where the rubber was no longer bonded to the carcass.
