Think you realise by now "The Rules" is a misstake. Some are spot-on, but most are not relevant.
note: Merckx and De Vlaeminck, no helmets, as you did. Black knicks, fullstop, like Coffee.
Back in the day, nobody would even speak of "the rules" (hence my Fight Club ref.)
Rule #1. You do not talk about 'The Rules'.
Rule #2. You DO NOT talk about 'The Rules'.
It was all by observation, and the longer your around, the more you knew.
At the end of the day, ALL rules are a guide, you bend them enough, so they look straight to you.
The difference, is whether you just look the part, or you are the part.
Best line in the whole effort... "Free your mind and your legs will follow"
It's what you can do on the bike, that matters, in the end.
Enjoy your ride.
Cheers

Maybe you should read the OP again. I'm neither disdainful of, or bound by The Rules.brentono wrote:Ken Ho

This now very old thread was originally triggered by someone beating someone else over the head about breking ones of the Rules.
Me, I believe thaT rules are meant to guide us in the dark. In line with your thoughts, once you have enough knowledge, you can make your own rules. I don't like people who think that rules are meant to replace thinking, rather than to enhance it.
After all, that where rules come from. People with enough experience to define stuff.

Think we were pretty well in agreement.
My Point was back in the day (when the "Rules" were envoked) no-one even spoke of them.
You learnt by observation.
I may have actually been one of the people with enough experience to define stuff.
I made my own rules.

I mostly quote it at myself, but then, only when I want to. I've done my hard yards in this life. I've also been badly burnt out more than once.brentono wrote:Rule #5 is easy to quote, don't talk about it, Just Do It! (walks away shakin' head, thinkin'... marshmallows)

Pain, it's a funny thing, you can't share it with anyone.
(And, on the bike, you never, repeat NEVER, show it!)

As you know, I bloody hate that. I need to find the footage of the bloke who rode past with the angry look on his face.norbs wrote: And some roadies just refuse to say hello or even acknowledge you. I can feel another blog post coming.

Yeah, when did people stop giving a nod or a wave ? I get a bit miffed, and think bugger that, I'm gonna stop, but then, I don't want to be the one someone else thinks the same thing of, so I keep waving despite being ignored most of the time.Mugglechops wrote:As you know, I bloody hate that. I think this happens to most of us. I just keep nodding to people and don't bother looking for a response. That way I've done my part and won't get offended by any lack of response.Ken Ho wrote:Yeah, when did people stop giving a nod or a wave ? Funny how the thread is bagging a set of rules, but when someone breaks your rule that for some reason on a bike we should all wave at eachother you get miffed or abuse them
Sometimes I wave sometimes I don't, depends how much I am suffering I suppose. Either way who cares.

Not acknowledging fellow cyclists is pretty widely regarded as douchebaggery.

i ride past about 100 cyclists on my morning and then afternoon commute, do i have to wave at each one to avoid being labeled a douchebag?mezla wrote:I don't think this thread is bagging a set of rules. Everyone knows "The Rules" are a tongue in cheek half serious bit of fun.

On a Sunday morning up to Kinglake / Dandenongs I always nod/wave.
Yet I never consider doing it on the commute.
I wonder why.
