How does the TPI affect you

Postby 15wilsonwu » Sat Sep 15, 2012 7:38 pm

How can the TPI of a tyre affect you in terms of performance? The highter the tpi, the more expensive it seems to be. Can it really affect the performance?

Sheldon Brown on Tyres

Basically, higher TPI (threads per inch) results in a lighter and more flexible tyre which usually has a lower rolling resistance - meaning better performance - meaning higher price.

Don't forget comfort, I'm now riding on 320 TPI tubulars and on the sorts of rubbish road surfaces I have at my disposal the finer wall material really makes for a more comfortable ride. Completed my first century ride today - took this photo for this very reason....... this 8.2km section of diabolically vibration inducing road was made with 35mm aggregate - for the dairy trucks which hammer it twice daily - hardly made for civilised bike riding but out here in the stick you play the hand your dealt with when it comes to nasty road surfaces.
