Bike Hate by Austereo FM Radio Station

Postby Dr_Mutley » Sun Oct 21, 2012 5:26 am

This is what cyclists are up against in Adelaide. A popular, Austereo FM Station (SAFM), inciting hate towards cyclists via their Facebook page. And to think we are the home of the Tour Down Under.

Makes me glad not to be South Australian sometimes... Shame on the pathetic people in social media/marketing/promotion at SAFM... U guys are the real douches...

Is that a 3 lane road?

Fair call I reckon, even if a bit harsh in delivery. What's wrong with the bike/breakdown lane to the left? Or at least keeping to the left of the lane he's in?

What and get a close shave by some idiot that can't be bothered to then change lanes?

The cyclist is well within his rights to ride in the center of the lane on a multi lane road, and most importantly of the lot is protecting his own safety by doing so.

Just because you can doesnt mean you should. There is no need for the rider to "take the lane" there.

Its either the breakdown lane or the center of the lane he's in. Riding to the left of the lane is not a good idea.

BTW I would hardly call the area to the left of this road a breakdown lane.

Looking at the Anzac Hwy on Google maps it has a 'bike lane' that is less than 1/3 the width of a regular lane. I reckon he's made the call (a personal one for every driver) that the 'bike lane' is unsafe in the conditions he is riding. If that is the case it may be better to claim the lane fully to avoid bogan close shaves.

Anzac Highway is the main road from the City to the beach at Glenelg. It's 3 lanes wide and apart from morning/afternoon peak hour it is never full. And apart from morning/afternoon peak hour the left lane is NOT a permanent lane (clearway only during peak hour). The left lane is notorious for having cars parked along it- disrupting the flow of traffic. This cyclist is not doing anything wrong at all, and knowing the road- he's actually riding very smart; an instant in time along a road that isn't full of traffic (plenty of empty spaces) and a semi-permanent car park in that left lane doesn't really mean he's holding up a heap of cars. Besides, buses use that lane all day long and swerve into the centre lane every time there's a car parked on the left.

But... he might slow a motorist down!

Riding safely is no excuse - can you just imagine if that driver had been in bit of a hurry. I mean, it hardly bears thinking about.

At least our big media companies have the courage to educate their driving audience that if they see a guy on a bike, he's a "douche".

The cyclist may have just passed a parked car, so tough to make a call on... As someone else ha mentioned, the bike lane on ANZAC Hwy is usually full of cars and buses.

The real issue here is one of SA's biggest radio stations perpetuating the bike hate issue by inflaming it unnecessarily on their Facebook page. I will assume it will be removed soon after enough complaints are made, hence why the screen capture was taken...

Also, the cyclist is about to approach the intersection where a cyclist was killed last year, by a car who failed to see, and give way to a cyclist in the bike lane.

Angus from austereo was right to post his annoyance because he left too late for work so was in a hurry, isn't aware of the road rules that a cyclist can legally occupy a lane and also needed someone else to blame.

Also the bike lane is only active in peak times and has manhole/drains which suck in tires. When its not a clearway you have to deal with cars parked every 10 or so meters.

I ride in the middle of the lane most of the time as well.

Perhaps a campaign to target the adverstisers on that radio station may be in order? A truly moronic comment displaying ignorance of the road rules and encouraging road rage against vulnerable cyclists. He is the real douche.

And of course he was driving safely in having to find his camera on his phone and then try and focus on the rider, all the while maintaining a safe driving practise. Looser. :x

You're only reading the most recent of the 150-odd posts. The first 50-70 are dishearteningly bogan rants.
