An alleged drug-driver has been charged after a two-year-old child was run over and critically injured in New South Wales’ Hunter region.

The driver was arrested at a Woodberry home and taken to Maitland Hospital where she underwent mandatory drug and urine testing.

She has since been charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving, not reverse vehicle safely, and amount of illicit drug in fluid or blood.

The woman was granted conditional bail to face Maitland Local Court on March 28.

A record number of drivers were booked for speeding offences by mobile speed cameras in Canberra during 2017, new figures show.

In the past calendar year there were 21,679 offences detected generating more than $6.5 million in fines.

The number of offences captured by the cameras has tripled over the past five years, with just more than 7000 offences recorded.

In the same time period, revenue raised through speeding fines has increased nearly 500 per cent, rising from $1.34 million in fines during 2012.

But cyclists are the problem, not wearing helmets and running red lights...
If only these motorists were licenced and their cars registered...

I've got to say, the only way a motorist would get that for killing 2 cyclists is if russian nerve gas was involved.

I've got to say, the only way a motorist would get that for killing 2 cyclists is if russian nerve gas was involved.

It never ceases to amaze me at the massive (and blatant) differences in penalties that we often see when a motorist kills a cyclist compared to when they kill another motorist or pedestrian.

Compare the above case with that of a young cyclist named Andrew Ayre who was killed several years back here in Newcastle. The driver (Joel Anthony Costello) was driving the prime mover of a large truck, and was engaged in a road rage "duel" with another car as he drove into the breakdown lane to the left of the car to try and force his way into a line of traffic some 50m or so past the end of a merging lane.

In fine weather with clear visibility, he saw Mr Ayre cycling in the breakdown lane but chose to neither brake nor swerve as it would have interrupted his "duel" causing him to lose his battle with the cars that wouldn't let him in. Without even slowing he mowed down Ayre in a manner so blatant that a furious following driver said "Your 15 seconds of road rage just cost that young cyclist his life!".

Costello then continued to drive unlicensed and didn't even attend on his court date, instead doing a runner until he was eventually apprehended driving a different unregistered truck - unlicensed to boot!. This guy killed Ayre in one of the most culpable ways imaginable, and then he did just about everything he could possibly do to compound the crime. So what did they slap him with? You wont believe it but just 22 months? But it gets even better, he got compassion due to a sick family member and was released after just 12 months (and 14 days).

How is this even comparable to the Adem Arpaci case above, who was only indirectly involved with the death of the other motorist anyway. Yet the sentences are so arse about! What the fark! What the freaking fark! This stuff makes me so angry.

That is sickening. Who in their right mind would think that is a fair sentence.

I also thought 22 years for that other bloke was a bit over the top but hopefully it serves as a shock to all these hoons and erratic drivers. Wishful thinking I know...

Had a ripper last night - on a road that is level before descending rapidly, which means that your lights point into the sky until you're completely on the downhill bit.

Moron coming uphill complained "you're lights blinded me" - Said moron was in a 4wd ute, jacked up to the point that his lights were at my eye level & were both bright and badly focused. So I politely pointed ut my lights were not as blinding as his. The priceless response

Ironically, under the NSW road rules, it is illegal for the lights on a motor vehicle to dazzle a cyclist but not illegal for a cyclist's lights to dazzle a driver as Rule 219 does not apply to cyclists (as cyclists are excepted under Rule 214). Being innnna car is actually what makes his lights illegal.

Obviously, despite it not being illegal under the road rules, it isn't a good idea to have a light setup likely to dazzle drivers but unfortunately lights bright enough to see the road will have a brief issue when you go over a crest (the same as for properly setup vehicle headlights).

It was very considerate of the driver who couldn't manage to drive in a straight line to have his passenger side window down so when we stopped at the lights I could politely tell him which orifice he could insert his mobile phone.
