Typical Bike Box Dimensions

Postby RobM » Thu Nov 08, 2012 11:45 am

To save me going to down to the bikeshop, getting one and then measuring it...

Does anyone have a bike box and can post up the dimensions for me?

I am guessing they are all the same regardless of frame size. But if they arent, i would be sourcing one to fit a medium hardtail mountain bike (medium/large road bike would be similar size i guess).

Thanks very much :D

Have a Virgin (airways) bike box in the office here. Measures 1420 long, 300 wide and 800 high. All dimensions mm and are outside measurements. It seems that the width is a bit more generous than the original packing that new bikes come in.

I have the original shipping box from Trek for my Madone (road bike). This was used originally to freight the bike from the USA and recently I flew with it on Qantas to Melbourne for Around the Bay, and had it freighted back to Perth unaccompanied. Dimensions are 115cm long, 79cm high and 27cm wide.

They are all different sizes. The Airline boxes are very large and good for flying (cost based on weight) not good for freight which is based on volume. The smaller boxes are good but you need to take both wheels off to make your bike fit in.

If you're going to Europe don't exceed 110cm x 90cm if you want to get it on a train.
