Tube valve caps and nuts.
Postby 531db » Sun Apr 27, 2008 10:50 pm
I have a little plastic container in which I put the the little metal tube presta valve nuts (I don't use them) and plastic valve caps (I reuse the one from the punctured tube mainly).
Anyway, whilst installing tubes on a new project today, on a whim I counted up my surplus nuts (20) and caps (12).
Does anybody else have a collection of nuts and caps? How many?

I probably got hundreds of the things, but they're not in a "...little plastic container..." . Mine are either scattered throughout the garage or on the end of valves of dozens of neatly rolled, new and used/repaired , size categorised (16", 20", 22", 24", 26", 700C, 27".....), weighed and labelled, pre-talced, Presta valved tubes (& stored in individual upright PVC aggy-pipe dispensers)!! (and then there's the Schraeder valves.... and the Dunlop valves.....) !
But do you think I can ever find one of the darned things when I need one?!!!

Is there any better evidence that Europe is a friendlier place for cyclists...
Cheers.

Hi 531db. I've edited/ resized the original pic in this thread to fit message board (apologies for not resizing it originally), but the pic in your quote remains in the larger format (or is it just my computer showing it this way)? Any chance you could resize/edit your reply to fit also? Cheers

I know that a lot of riders don't use it. But for me, after trying both, I have gone back to both the nut and cap. The nut keeps the valve stem in position when connecting to the pump. The valve stops dirt get into the valve. I have one tube where the valve have started to go bad with inconsistent seal and was likely to have been caused by dirt getting into the stem on a rainy ride. In any case, the weight of those are pretty trivial.Bnej wrote:Holds the valve in place if the tube isn't fully inflated, and stops it from twisting around while you pump it up.
