Bike Position

I have been watching videos and talking to different people about their biomechanics on their bike. For example, when you are seated on your bike, cranks are parallel with the floor, does your ball of your foot line up with the axle on your pedal? If not how far away is your centre of your pedal in regard to your ball of the foot? Does 5mm out make abig difference? What really is the "perfect" fit. Now I am not world class in cycling but how far do you really go? Does this attribute to the quads working more? Is this why people get sore below the knee(patella) because the quads are working more and getting tight which results in a sore patellel or ITB?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Wal

There are so many different views on this subject, Lemond, Wiggens and the bloke on the Saturday bunch ride all have a different opinon... Personly, i am a tall rider and am of the beleif you need to play around untill you find the right and comfy posistion. I have had my new bike for around 6 months now and put my seat up about 1/4 of an inch last week (4th raiseof seat since being set up at my lbs) and find i have alot more power on the flats and the hills, yet i can only just touch the ground on tips of shoes when seated.
I f you know of other people around you height that ride look at thier posistion and ask them what they think as it also come down to pedel technique eg. point toes downwards or flat footed. I pedel with my toes poited down slightly so hence i have i higher seat posistion.

Well took the bike for a very easy 40min spin this morning. Will raise the seat another 10mm. But apart from that it feels very fast. I was sitting on around 22 - 25kph and it was effortless. So will see how we go.
