Hopefully I can do more climbs this year... But to honest I would be happy to half the climbing completed this year if I could swap it for climbing faster , last year I never really hit peak form due to work commitments ( which didn't always mean time off the bike, but did mean backing off for two week periods always at the wrong time! )... Let's hope 2014 goes a bit better. good luck all.

I have always found my phone to be just as accurate as my mates riding with Garmins. Sometimes their up. Sometimes there down. The deviations in accuracy are no different between my phone and a Garmin then between a few Garmins on the same ride.Daccordi Rider wrote:I got to 238,000m. I use the iPhone app which can be optimistic but pretty sure I would've cracked the 200k Mark anyway which was my target. Enjoyed the challenge, it kept me focused during winter and led to some good race results, particularly races with KOM's.

A guy I ride with occasionally or we cover the same route separately always has a lot more altitude gain using his phone versus my Garmin.singlespeedscott wrote:I have always found my phone to be just as accurate as my mates riding with Garmins. +1 the elevation maps that Strava uses for the iPhone app aren't accurate from what I've seen. from 10-50% gain.biker jk wrote:A guy I ride with occasionally or we cover the same route separately always has a lot more altitude gain using his phone versus my Garmin.singlespeedscott wrote:I have always found my phone to be just as accurate as my mates riding with Garmins. From my Strava gazing, at the Vic snowfields its worse. Hotham on an Iphone will get you 4100m. Garmin says 1900m. You often see dudes who head out there getting 15,000m in a week while their garmin buddies are well under 10,000m.

Perusing your rides and comparing the elevation numbers with your buddies, it would appear there is something wrong with your Garmin.Dimma wrote:Since I purchased a 510 my elevation is at least 50% higher than when using iPhone.

Do you have it on an out-front style mount, or another type of mount that covers up the small holes in the base (these are how it measures altitude).

Doh! I only got 1677m for Hotham. Just have to climb more I guess...boss wrote: From my Strava gazing, at the Vic snowfields its worse. Hotham on an Iphone will get you 4100m. Garmin says 1900m. [edit: admittedly, that was just the climb, not from Bright]

This is the sort of thing I see around the place reasonably often. Names censored as I don't intend to name/shame... it's not really that big a deal! But it does get the point across well.

Nothing wrong with Garmin just have the standard out front mount that came in the box, same as everyone else.boss wrote:Perusing your rides and comparing the elevation numbers with your buddies, it would appear there is something wrong with your Garmin.Dimma wrote:Since I purchased a 510 my elevation is at least 50% higher than when using iPhone.

I think it is just more sensitive to subtle changes in elevation compared to older models.
Often I'd ride in & home from start point, do extra Mt Gravatt repeats and end up with less than guys driving to start, in the end GPS data is highly variable.

Going off last years figures the iphone will give me 7100m climbing for the classic vs an actual of 3800. I'll let you all know the result when its done.
