Edge 800 and Touring

Postby Tim » Thu Jan 17, 2013 7:55 pm

I'm going on a cycling tour of around three weeks duration.
How do I keep a running tally on daily distances and overall distance with an Edge 800.
Do I push the Lap button at the end of each day, and then Start the next morning?
I want to record the ride as a single activity but also save daily distances.

With the Edge 705, turning off the unit starts a new lap. So i'd assume the 800 works the same way.
You have much more faith in the technology than I have. I reset each day so as not to lose all my data.
You can always get the running tally either on the odometer, or in history, or on a scrap of paper.

Thanks Ken. I don't have much faith in the technology at all.
I like the sound of a pen and notebook more than a silicon chip (I think they still use them, or is that old technology).
Anyway, if anybody knows for sure with the 800, please let me know.

When are you going? I might play with this on the weekend. There are a few tools around for manipulating FIT files but the ones I've looked at (fitdump/fitsed, ANT+ sdk) are not particularly user-friendly.
[edit for clarity]
The approach I was thinking of was keep them as separate files on the device and join them afterward.

Thanks kb, but I'm leaving tomorrow morning at 9.00am. No internet after that for a while.

That's what I thought. Save each day as an individual activity. The problem then is I can't display the entire tour on Garminconnect with a single map.
The other option is to just turn the 800 off at the end of each day and see what happens. I'll keep a manual record of each day just to be sure.

If I was you I'd be wiping out all my current rides on that 800 as the 800 can get full.
Another downgrade from the 705...

I heard about problems with the 800 carrying too much data so I wipe old activities at the end of each ride.
Thankfully I haven't had any problems with mine to date, excepting, but not excusing the very poorly performing heart rate monitors that seem to give up the ghost around the six month mark. I was told by the supplier that the monitors are "consumable". Sounds like BS to me. Faulty, cheaply made garbage to my way of thinking.

Keep them all, upload to Strava, then use the "Strava Multiple Ride Mapper" to display the entire route.

SportTracks also has a track join facility - if you don't want to give Strava all your data.

Having owned both a Edge 705 and 500 which fairly regularly corrupt data once they've
got more than a few hours worth of data stored, I'd be saving the tracks to my PC etc.,.
every day.

At the end of each day just hit stop, then start again the next day, the activity won't be finished til you reset it.

If you concerned about using all your memory just throw a micro sd in the back, I wouldn't be though, activity file sizes are tiny
