Garmin & Strava segments on the move?
Postby bardygrub » Tue Feb 05, 2013 7:58 am
Hi All,
Is there any way, or does any model of garmin notify you that you are entering a segment while on the move?
Cheers.

I wouldn't think so - the respective companies / manufacturers would probably be loathe to do so, as it would then be a prima-facie admission that they promote racing (for best times) on public roads / paths. The (potential) civil liability exposure would be enormous - just look at some of the suits being fought in the US at present, with regard to Strava segment chasing.

now, this isn't an easy thing to do, but you can set this up.
1. go on strava, find a segment of interest, download the SEGMENT .gpx file
2. go to garmin connect and upload the gpx file as a 'course'
3. upload the course to your garmin
4. go to courses on your garmin and select one of the ones you uploaded.
as far as i know there is no way to do this automatically or even in a semi automated fashion. but it can be done, and might come in handy if you are targeting a specific KOM?

Predicting this topic will make the Tsar Bomba explosion look like a fizzle!
The best method is just to manually add them to your Garmin device, or just remember where particular ones are.
But really, none of us ever fight for Strava segments - we are all slow careful riders (yeah right).

Look at the " Alternative Leader Board " on veloviewer is broken and you will see that it will not be much use have such a function... but it is interesting.
