Here's the full report Organised Crime and Drugs in Sports.

No names in this version, but a confidential copy with names has been passed onto the
relevant authorities for prosecution etc.,. The ACC suggests that the use has spread to the
sub-elite level where youngsters are competing for places in the elite (pro) teams etc.,.

The crime commission has coined an interesting new term PIED for
Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs.

Suspect the image of more than a few sports heroes will be battered by the time
the authorities get through the evidence.

Yeah I didn't realise that Lance Armstrong was involved in football & every other sport in Australia, because we all know that it's all Lance Armstrongs fault, there was no doping before him & there'll be no doping after he's gone.

It's all a wet dream for the media. They must be thanking their lucky stars right now....

Just imagine how far they'll be able to run with this one for weeks and weeks to come.

Lance who? That's old news now.....let's keep on top of things people. Football is the new evil now :-)

IMO, they only have themselves to blame. Everyone has the opportunity to say NO and walk away.
Sure it may mean their career is over, or they lose their position with the club but if people feel strongly about it being the wrong thing to do then the price just wouldn't be worth it.....which I'm sure many are about to find out the hard way.

Still, we are all human and I guess when you grow up dreaming of becoming a pro and making money from the sport you love, only to later find out that in order to continue in that elite level you have to potentially do things you don't agree with would be hard to live with. Do you give up your dreams for your morals or try and justify things to find a balance somewhere in-between - hoping you never get caught?

Pity there will be no winners and all losers out of this (except perhaps for the media).

Dave

Nice one Wombat! I also wondered what that "I" was about. Cocaine usage to show off how many $M they are being paid? Lower performing boys smoke weeds.

Gene therapy will be next. Until WADA/UCI starts a Gene Passport program, that will be the EPO of 21st Century.

If you don't find this tension in your workplace, then you aren't trying hard enough to get ahead. Most workplaces have this temptation - it is only that drugs and sport have special labels, but office politics has always been a hotbed for evil.

As for ozstriker's comment - I was surprised that there has been a corruption in sport probe and the timing of it is quite interesting (just after the Armstrong scandal) but realistically, I'm surprised that they didn't have cavity searches going on when Warne said he was approached to fix a game. Only a fool would think that there wasn't rampant fixing (or at least attempted fixing) throughout most codes.

One of the PIEDs identified by ACC was
• TA-65™—a drug which acts on a section of the DNA and is purported to reduce
ageing at the cellular level
(page 28 of report)
Messin with sections of DNA doesn't sound too far off gene therapy. So maybe already
here. It's in the section of the report dealing with drugs that haven't been tested
on humans. Ones for the guys who want to be human guinea pigs.

The next paragraph in the report discusses this one:
• Actovegin™—calf blood extract (used by a route of administration which is not
prohibited by WADA).
Matt Orford (formerly of Melbourne Storm and Manly Sea Eagles) admits to having
been injected with calf blood while at Manly.

Other teams have had premiership points and chances stripped from them for salary
cap cheating. LA's titles got ripped up, wonder if Rugby League is going to be that
serious about drug cheating.

Also look at it this way. Sport is now big business (Olympics included) and the only way to grow the business is to make it exciting and attractive to the audience, hence sponsors. As such, it's in both the sports people's and governing body's interest to out perform and create heroes. Busting and stopping doper will always be a passive reaction for these people.

The genetic pathway is so complex with so many direct and indirect mechanisms of attack. I fear it'll be a nightmare for the governing body, along with an exponential expense in testing/monitoring. Sorry being so pessimistic on this one.

Good question. I would say no to NRL being that serious. Their history, until the Storm, was pretty soft on the big issues.
Being a Storm supporter (I believe they didn't deserve their premierships in the cheating years) I can bet that Manly won't be stripped of their 2008 title.
I hope all the sports come down really hard on this, even if it affects the Storm or my beloved Hawks.
But you can tell by all the quotes yesterday, from various head coaches, that heads are well & truly buried in the sand.

Now, all these mega sport leagues are more for the entertainment value than a venue to test sporting prowess. Does this sound like the Roman Colosseum? Like WWE and WFC, which spectator cared for how those performers got their muscles? All they care is just brutal "entertainment". Similar is happening to all major sporting codes, cycling included.

I suspect that the "image" side of PEID will be used to muddy the waters somewhat. I can see it being used to confuse the punters into thinking that it's about big muscles and if the professional sportsperson doesn't look like a bodybuilder then they're not juicing or if they are they are not juicing that much. It also will allow athletes of non-brute strength sports, say Tennis, get overlooked.

Really, it seems very straight forward to me. When you have the top mens players serving at 200kph for hours on end, with no apparent drop in speed, something isn’t normal. Seeing guys getting around the court like their backside is on fire after a 5 hour game. Or play an epic, and then are back out there again the next day, as fresh as a daisy. Again, you have to ask questions.

Cheats can always be caught. All of these new hi-tech forms of doping and cheating are detectable, and doping rings crackable; if not by chemistry, then by wiretaps and witness testimony and investigation.

There is no way to cheat and get away with it long term. All you need is a governing body intent on running a clean sport.

That was clearly absent in cycling. Lance Armstrong tested positive during the 1999 Tour de France for corticosteroids. But, one year after the Festina doping affair, the UCI was intent on avoiding the scandal and negative publicity that comes with catching cheats.

Well, that worked out awesomely. Now, no sporting scandal can break anywhere without the sport of cycling being raised as the obligatory, odious, comparison.

Even so, I wouldn't be surprised to learn there are lots of administrators of Australian sports out there who are determined to follow the UCI's lead of trying to avoid a scandal at all costs, chiefly by not catching anyone.

Let's see how that goes.
